Making Friends in an MMORPG

Lisa Mason
For some gamers, an MMORPG is more than just a game. Friendships that are made in the game can last a lifetime. In some cases, people even fall in love and get married. MMO friends meet in real life and often have stronger relationships than the friendships they have from the "real world".

Non-gamers sometimes have difficulty understanding gamers and what it means to make friends in an MMORPG. But if you've ever played one long enough to make good friends of your own then you can understand the importance of it and how it happens.

So why is it that people who play MMORPGs often make such good friendships with other players? Part of it is due to the sheer amount of time spent together. Another part of it is the shared interests. But there is something more to it than that.

There is something of a subculture that happens in the online gaming scene. When you play a game together, it's like you share a bond on some level that people who do not play that game will not understand. You will work towards a common goal together even if you would not normally like each other in the real world.

You meet people from places you would never have met people from before and you share time together, often working as a team, which requires an understanding and often an acceptance of one another- at least enough to get the job done.

MMOs bring together many different types of people from different walks of life; different age groups and background. They bring together people who often would not be friends in any other way but they are because they share a common interest in the game. Sometimes the game acts as an escape from the everyday life and mundane tasks and those friends who are met inside the game provide a relief that real life friends may not be able to give.

When making friends in an MMOPRG, remember that your personal security is important. You don't want to go around giving out loads of personal information about yourself to just anyone and everyone. You may want to be cautious about using real names or full names or telling the location of your house, workplace or school, especially to people you do not know that well.

When proper safety measures are followed, making friends in an MMORPG can be a very good addition to your life. You will find a different type of bond and relationship and while some gamer friends will come and go, many will stay with you for years.
