Making an Irish Crochet St. Patrick's Day Shamrock

A Fun New Way to Celebrate This Year

Joyce Ryan
This St. Patrick's Day, add a bit of color to your holiday celebration with an Irish crochet shamrock. The shamrock is a traditional sign of St. Patrick's Day and the Irish crochet technique is another way to pay tribute to the holiday's origin. Irish crochet is an older technique that uses a network of stitching to connect several pieces together. In this project, the shamrock is an individual piece that can either be connected to a background of your choice or simply used by itself as a home decoration or accent. Even novices to Irish crocheting can learn how to make one of these easy St. Patrick's Day party favors.

Making an Irish crochet St. Patrick's Day shamrock: Equipment you'll need

If you are new to Irish crocheting, use a size five or eight thickness cotton mercerized thread for your St. Patrick's Day shamrock. The thicker thread will make it easier to handle. A size seven steel crochet hook is usually best, but you can move up or down a size if this does not feel comfortable.

Making an Irish crochet St. Patrick's Day shamrock: Crochet the first shamrock leaf

To start off, make a slipknot in your thread, slipping from the thread's tail and not the ball. Wrap the tail over the thread that runs off of the ball. From here, you can begin to Irish crochet two separate chains. Keeping the chain's smooth side facing you, work into the second chain's top strand. Stitch 17 treble crochets, then a double and fasten off the end of the thread. You should see your slipknot become bigger as you make more stitches on your Irish crochet St. Patrick's Day shamrock. Pull the string until the crocheted piece starts to resemble a shamrock leaf.

Making an Irish crochet St. Patrick's Day shamrock: Making the other two leaves

Repeat the process to make the other two shamrock leaves, but do not fasten off the last one. To connect all three leaves of your St. Patrick's Day shamrock, run the crochet hook through the hole in the center and join them all together with a slip stitch. In addition to your working thread, you should see another five strands of thread running from this central connection point.

Work several double crochets over these five strands until you have a long stem. Fasten off your working thread and run it through the center of the shamrock's stem. Trim the remaining five threads so that the edge of the stem is flat. Now you can block or press your Irish crochet St. Patrick's Day shamrock if you feel it is necessary.
