Making Lavender Body Balm

Moisturizing and Soothing Balm

Sharon Schmidt Tyler

Lavender body balm moisturizes your skin while helping you relax. It is one of my favorite balms to use after a long bath or shower, particularly right before bed after a long day. The coconut and almond oil moisturize your skin evenly while leaving behind a soft, lingering fragrance. You can easily make this body balm and treat yourself to the luxurious feel and scent of this great moisturizer, or make larger batches and give jars of it away as gifts..

Lavadin is hybrid of a couple types of lavenders, and might be the hardest ingredient here to find. If you cannot find it, you can use more lavender essential oil or substitute other favored scents. If you prefer to use different oils or herbs than the ones I use, feel free to experiment and personalize this balm to meet own personal preferences. Just remember to keep the ratio of carrier oils, beeswax, and essential oils the same to keep the proper consistency. You can use the oils and essential oils best suited for your skin type, to treat scrapes or skin problems, or just to moisturize your skin and smell good. Just remember to write down all of your experiments so that you can repeat your favorite combinations, and avoid repeating those you do not like. Do not forget to check for allergic reactions and sensitivities prior to using any essential oils, carrier oils, or herbs.

Ingredients:

30 Drops of lavender essential oil

10 Drops of lavadin essential oil

1 Tablespoon of beeswax

2 Ounces of coconut oil

2 Tablespoons of almond oil

Directions:

  1. Place the beeswax, coconut oil, and almond oil in a bowl.

  2. Set the bowl over a saucepan of boiling water and turn off the heat.

  3. Stir the beeswax and oils until it has completely melted and is well blended.

  4. As the mixture begins to cool and emulsify, add the essential oils drop by drop while continuing to stir.

  5. Pour the blend into a glass jar, preferably a dark colored jar, and seal with a tight fitting lid.

  6. Label the jar and leave it to set.

This will make around three and a half ounces of body balm. You can multiply the recipe to make more, for yourself or to package and give as gifts. However, the balm is best used within three months of being made, so do not get too carried away and make large batches that might go to waste unless you plan on giving it away as a gift. A little of the balm really does go a long way.

Thanks Sheri. I love anything lavender and/or peppermint in it, so this is one of my favorites too.
