Making Long Distance Online Relationships Work

GK
Many people swear off finding love on the Internet because they feel it is unsafe. However, others feel more comfortable chatting with someone online than talking to them face to face. The second kind of people seek out chat rooms and online dating services to find their perfect match. Unless you get lucky and find someone near you, many online relationships begin as long distance ones. These are tough to make last, but if the two of you are committed, the relationship can pull through until the two of you are together.

Just like marriages and real world dating relationships need attention, so do online ones. The couple should keep in touch regularly, via email, instant messages, or telephone. Not spending time online together is similar to not seeing each other in the real world. As any relationship will fade with neglect, if your online partner seems to be avoiding you, it may be time to move on.

Take time to get to know each other before flying off to meet. Meeting is a big step in an online relationship, similar to going steady or getting engaged. If one side of the couple is pushing for a meeting while the other is not yet ready to take that leap, conflicting feelings may start to generate in the relationship. Nurture your love, and give it time to develop. Doing so will create a lasting relationship that both of you will love being a part of.

Never forget to make each other feel special, wanted, and loved. Share photos of your family, pets, and recent vacations or other fun times you've experienced. Send each other random messages of love, whether it be through cute text messages, emails, or greeting cards in the mail. Sending small gifts through snail mail will also help the relationship blossom. Call each other, and if there's no answer, leave a message telling them you are thinking about them. The small things often mean the most, no matter what kind of relationship you are in.

For many people, online dating is the way to go when trying to find the love of their life. It is often easier to be yourself online, where you can hide behind your computer if someone rejects you. Online relationships can happen, and many can lead to marriage and a "happily ever after" story if they are done right. Just do all the things you would in a normal relationship, but tweak them a bit so they can be performed at a distance.
