Will we hurt the baby?
This can be a concern in the first trimester while the fetus is still changing into something resembling human, but as long as the mother-to-be is not afraid to speak up if things get uncomfortable the baby is not in danger. In fact, the rhythmic motions of intercourse and internal contractions from orgasm can lull the baby into a contented sleep.
Is the baby aware of what's happening?
The baby is protected from the more personal details of intercourse by a fleshy sack and a lot of amniotic fluid. While the physical motion of sex can be picked up from the baby he is not seeing, touching or feeling anything that would make the act of lovemaking during pregnancy awkward or wrong.
What's the best way to ensure the baby's safety?
By allowing the woman to control all aspects of lovemaking. Mother Nature gave her many warning systems to help protect her child, so if the baby is at risk her body will tell her.
What's the best position?
While this is a matter of personal taste, most couples prefer to have the woman on top especially during the later months of the pregnancy. As her belly grows it becomes more uncomfortable for the woman to lie under the full weight of the man. This position also allows the woman to control how deeply she is penetrated by her lover, a concern as the baby starts to descend down the birth canal.
When can we expect our sex life to resume after the baby is born?
When the kid goes to college! But seriously most couples start to have intercourse 6-12 weeks after the child is born. Medically this gives the woman time to heal from the experience. Emotionally, most new parents tend to obsess over their new roommate for awhile and may find sexual feelings fall by the wayside. Some new mothers experience post-partum depression which can also cause less-than-sexy feelings in her. Couples should not worry though; their sex life isn't going away... just changing. Many couples report a more rewarding and emotional sex life after baby comes.
