Making Money Online: Niche Blogs vs. Personal Blogging

Marilisa Kinney Sachteleben
When people ask me for advice on how to succeed as an Internet writer, I always say, 'I don't know. When I succeed I'll let you know!'. But my second piece of advice is always; start niche blogs on subjects you know about and add links to your articles. Their response, generally, is 'oh, I already have a blog'. The difference is that the blog or blogs they are referring to, are generally personal or social diary blogs. The type of blogging that I refer to, niche blogging is a different species from personal blogging.

My niche blogs net me about $15 to $25 in advertising alone, per day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Of my 57 niche blogs, about 25 get updated more than once per week. My most successful niche blog www.freeprintableactivities.blogspot.com get 1200- 2800 hits daily. Four of my other niche blogs get one hundred to 500 hits daily. The other twenty or so of my successful niche blogs get 5- 100 hits per day. Because all my blog entries consist of snippets of my Associated Content articles embedded with links back to Associated Content and other online companies that I write for, those hits translate to page views.

What's the difference between niche and personal blogging? Niche blogs focus on providing information and resources to viewers. Viewers are directed to niche blogs from searches, by typing in keywords linked to niche blogs. I own blogs with food tips and recipes, writing tips, health advice, lesson plans for teachers, homeschooler tips, coloring pages, movie recommendations, music lists, holiday helps, household hints, shopping tips, money saving advice, green living and more. The reason that niche blogging works so well for me, is that niche blogging provides services to customers.

Personal blogs only record what is happening with an individual person or family. Personal blogs are great for social sites, but not for generating a great deal of readers, subscribers, page views or income. You can place advertisements on personal blogs and that may earn you a bit of money. But niche blogging about subjects that you know about and write about are the way to make money on Internet searches. I manage most of my blogs through www.blogger.com and www.wordpress.com. Both of these sites offer free blogging.

To begin your blog, make a list of things that you know about: music, restaurant reviews, babies, cooking, crafts, sports, martial arts, technology, special health issues, video games, fishing, car repair, wherever your skills and interests lie, is a good place to begin. Choose a blog title and URL that fits your site. Both blogging sites, especially www.blogger.com are user-friendly. Nice article. It's great to read and not be distracted by words used wrong, improper punctuation, etc. Thanks for a well-written piece.

I have a blog about crocheting and another about gardening and my chickens, but I don't post to them as often as I should and I need to write more articles here that deal with both topics. Since I'm now FC in crafts, those can go on my crochet blog, and if I decide to try for gardening FC, will tie that in to the other blog too. Thanks for more inspiration!
