Tips for Staying Healthy in a Bad Economy

David Leavitt
Even in the best of times it can be hard for one to keep their body healthy and in shape. In a bad economy many people will cut any unnecessary spending as much as they can so they can pay their bills. However it is important to maintain one's health, especially if they are on a budget.

Eat healthy and buy food when it is on sale

Eating healthy is the most essential way to stay healthy. Make sure to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. Raw vegetables have a higher mineral content and are healthier than cooked ones. One of the easiest ways to make one's money stretch farther when they shop for their groceries is to buy food when it is on sale. Meat can be very expensive, however super markets tend to offer one to two dollars off a pound every three to four weeks. The trick is to stock up on items like boneless chicken and ground beef when one sees these sales so that they don't pay full price when they aren't on sale.

Supplement your diet

If one isn't eating a healthy diet because they cannot afford to eat right, they should consider buying vitamins to supplement their diet. These days, vitamins come in huge containers that often have enough pills to last the year for one individual. Although the upfront price of the vitamins may seem high, if one spreads the cost over the course of their year they will see that it is a bargain for the benefit.

Get plenty of exercise

There is no reason to pay for a gym membership when one can exercise at home for free. Let's face it, many people who pay for gym membership never go, or don't go too often. Take a jog around your neighborhood, do pushups and sit-ups while watching television. Rather than buying an expensive weight set, one can lift heavy objects around their household such as buckets of paint.

Be consistent

Regardless of if one chooses to eat a healthier diet, supplement your diet with vitamins, get plenty of exercise, or idealistically do all three, it is essential for one to be consistent in their daily routine. By continuing to eat smartly and exercise each day, one should quickly start to get into shape and feel better. That they were able to stay healthy while on a budget is gravy.
