Making the Most of a Vacation at Home!

Turn Off the Computer and Phones!

Sherry Tomfeld
I have been on vacation for a couple of weeks. Where did we go? HOME! We stayed at home and vacationed! Is that possible? Yes and it was relaxing, cheap and revitalizing. How can you vacation if you are at home? What about being bothered or interrupted?

Vacationing at home is just like taking a vacation where you actually leave your home. It takes planning and will power. You have to be open to spontaneity and following the rules that you made in the planning process.

Our rules for a vacation at home.

No computer, unless it's to check weather conditions.

No business phone.

Don't get up early unless you are going fishing!!

Throw your diet out the window.

Don't be rigid with schedules.

Be spontaneous!!

OFF with the computer and phones! We turned them both off. People who needed to get ahold of us knew how to if there was an emergency. The first couple of days without the computer was definitely hard for me. I write for Associated Content and I knew I was falling behind on commenting on people's articles and behind on writing any of my own. But once I got used to using the computer only as a weather adviser, I really started to let go and relax.

My husband couldn't wait to turn his work phone off! I love that man. We had each other and no time constraints on either of us. We did our animal chores and the rest of each day was open for whatever we felt like.

We went fishing. Sometimes early in the day and sometimes late. We grabbed our water, beer and "treats" and the fishing dog called Daqs. Off we went to fish. The first time or two felt odd. Like we were kids skipping out of school. But sitting on the bank, without computer or phones, was really liberating! If you are stressed and haven't tried tuning out the world for a day or two, try it!

We ate when we were hungry. We slept when we felt like it. We did what we wanted to do when we wanted to do it. And most of all, we did not feel guilty for it! We had virtually no expenses for a terrific 2 weeks of vacation. We live in the country and we actually "road tripped" locally. It is surprising what is five to ten miles from you. New homes, lovely gardens and animals to be seen. So close and yet never observed if they are not on your daily route.

No money for vacation? Maybe it is cheaper than you think. Turn off your computer, your phones and look around you. There are many things, like fishing, that are free and fun and relaxing. Take your vacation at home and have a blast!!

Your "Staycation" sounded great. Most of our vacation time is spent at our home in the mountains. There I have no deadlines or obligations. However, I can't turn off my computer. It is when I am there I can stay on the computer as long as I like. I am taking a CWG writing course and I can study and write without interruption.

Beautiful lake, Sherry. I agree wholeheartedly: it's not a vacation if you're connected.

You took a STAYCATION, Sherry. I enjoy doing the same thing because there is no need for busy airports or finding parking spots on city streets.

Yes, so awesome Sherry. I love the rules in particular. That's why the call it a vacation or some say, a Stay-cation. Just brilliant & many things I had not ever thought of. Your a joy to read. Me!? I not as think as I smart I am. LOL

You are making me miss the cottage we stay at in Nags Head. It belongs to our son-in-law's parents but they let us stay there whenever we want. We haven't been in a year or so though.
