Making the Nation's Penal System Drug and Violence Free

Ending Prison Rape

Michael Skinner
All prison guards and the warden should go to jail every time a prison gets high or gets gang raped. There should be cameras everywhere in prison. Any guard or warden who takes a prisoner to an area where there are no cameras should go to prison. All the cameras should function and record an indelible record at all times. Any times the cameras do not record actual current events, all the guards and the warden have committed a crime and should be tried, convicted and sent to prison. The guards and wardens should receive substantially more pay--even double--because they are now taking substantially more risk. They can be tried, convicted and sent to prison for even small offenses. The warden and guards will be checked for drugs every day. Drug dogs and drug sniffing dogs will be used on everything and everyone who comes into the prison. Prisoners should never have physical contact or be in physical proximity of any of their visitors. This will prevent drug smuggling. Prisoners should never receive any sealed item. Everything convicts get, especially food, should be open, unsealed and screened for drugs first. If any drugs are ever found in a prisoner's cell, every prison guard and warden in the prison should be tried, convicted and sent to prison. Even prison medical personnel should be subject to search and drug detection and all of their medical equipment must contain FDA approved medical substances only. They shall be tried, convicted and sent to prison for any contraband.

If you think about it, the sort of thing we routinely accept in prison is completely unacceptable. The prison controls when prisoners eat, sleep, go to the bathroom, and exercise and where they do these things. Their contact with the outside world is controlled as well. If we want to accept that prisons are criminal enterprises run for the aggrandizement of the wardens and guards then that is one thing. If we want to accept that prisons are schools for criminals or a farm team from violent drug and race gangs then so be it. If we find these things unacceptable then everyone who accepts employment in a prison if responsible for making sure the culture and reality changes. Here is one thing the government should be continuously checking: the conditions of prisons. There should be a large federal task force making spot and surprise checks in every prison in America. If the surveillance system is working as it should, the spot checks could sometimes be done remotely. The reason the checks can not be done exclusively remotely is that if the guards and wardens know that what they do will never be physically checked, they will run the place like Gitmo or worse.

Anal sex should be banned in prison. It is too often used as a source of humiliation, coercion and just plain rape. It's does either do it yourself or conventional oral and as in all things in a prison, you will be watched while you are doing it so no means no.

Any prison which is overcrowded should be mandated to use tents to shelter prisoners. If tents are used then the standard of one prisoner per tent and plenty of room between tents should be enforced. In fact, once we get into the great outdoors, the necessity of bringing prisoners together for any reason is greatly lessened--as is the opportunity for mischief. The tents should be made of some translucent material. Again, you are not allowed to hide what you do in prison.

If boy scouts and soldiers who have done no wrong can happily exist in the great outdoors in tents in all kinds whether then certainly criminals who have done every conceivable wrong can do so as well.

Anyone in the penal system who says these things should not or can not be done should fired immediately and should be investigated thoroughly with the hope and expectation that along long last we have found the cancer that has turned our prisons into a violent criminal enterprise.

Prisoners should receive very frequent physical check ups and abrasions or bruising particularly around the anal area shall constitute proof that the wardens and guards have committed a crime. If the prisoner is trying to do it to himself, it's your job to stop him and record that fact. If one prisoner is doing to another, then ding, ding, ding, you win a prize if you have finally figured out that you were hired for one reason and one reason only, to prevent anal sex in prison! Well two reasons. The other reason is prevent drug use in prison.

We do not need TV or free weights in prison. Every prison should be a vast, vast library in which every technical, scientific, and engineering text which does not relate directly to violence is available. So no books on poisons, 50 ways to kill a man, or computer hacking. But every book on say object orient programming known to man should be in the prison library.

Oh by the way, just as I would not work in a sewer or a meat packing plant, I for one would never work in a prison. Rather we are looking for the same kind of people to work in a prison who went as a civilian to work in Iraq when it was still very violent. We will offer them great reward since we will double their pay, but they will take great risk since small mistakes could get them tried, convicted and sent to prison. The rule for these folks will be, you will almost never be punished for anything you do to keep prisoners separate and away from things like drugs and violence. You will almost always be punished for anything you do that do fails to keep the prisoners from drugs and violence. See through tents several yards apart would begin to seem very good to you. Put some kind of toilet and sink in the tent and you might have a nearly perfect solution.
