Making Your Own High-protein Energy Bars

Why Spend Money on Muscle Milk Bars when You Can Make These?

Jay Braun

A friend of mine got an original recipe out of a magazine she read. I actually took that idea a step further by changing some of the ingredients around. These are typically much lower in calories than many other bars you will find on the market as most of them are almost just like eating candy. My twist on this also will give you a higher protein content to build muscle and help you recover from workouts.

You will need the following ingredients to make these.

2 cups basic cereals base (corn flakes are good and granola based cereal)

¾ cups of nuts (Almonds are the best, but I also use peanuts)

¾ cup of dried fruit (raisins are the best, but I have used fresh bananas as well)

1 cup of chocolate chips (Dark is best to use)

1/3 cup of sugar

3 large egg whites

2 tablespoons of flour

2 scoops of protein powder (I recommend banana or strawberry flavor and low carb)

In a large mixing bowl pour you 2 cups of cereal, nuts. Chocolate chips, sugar and flour. Meanwhile take your egg whites and protein powder and blend them very well in a blender and let stand a few seconds to insure that it's properly mixed. When it is add that to the other ingredients and mix thoroughly. I personally just fold everything in with my hands instead of a spoon as it gets the mixing done much more even than a spoon for a better tasting bar. Then press it down into a tray or pan (I spray them with cooking spray first) then bake for 40-45 minutes at 300 degrees.

These should keep for just under a week and can easily be packed in a lunch box or a gym bag.
