Making Pancakes with Your Children

S. Morris
Now I come from a family of distant relatives and not so many family traditions. Some of you may have it the same way. Or some of you may be trying to find new ones to start. I found myself trying to make a lot when my kids were born. I thought what could they enjoy and what could I enjoy doing with them? One day I was standing there making pancakes for us. It dawned on me. Pancake shapes. So I took out my cookie cutters and started cutting shapes out of our pancakes. So I started doing this every holiday or special day.

Christmas, Valentines day, and Halloween. I loved this new tradition and so did my little ones. My daughter especially because she gets to help cook them. Most of all they were excited what they get put on them. When your done with cutting, you will have scrap pieces. Well you could put them in a container and save them for another breakfast day, sense there already cut up for your kids, or you could eat them that morning yourself. No wasting! We enjoy this and I am happy to have started this fun family tradition for my family. Down below will be some ideas for toppings for shape pancakes.

One idea is for Valentines Day. If you have cookie cutters you get right o it, or get some heart shaped cutters from the stores . Most stores have them. Not expensive either. Make whatever mix you use. Cook them and let them cool. When ready put on plates with the heart shaped cookie cutters. Set on the table for your children to start making there hearts. With that put out any Valentines decorations like sprinkles, and heart shaped confetti. Make sure you have the syrup out in an easy pour container. You could also put out strawberry jelly for a Valentines look. Let them get started . You can join in the fun too. See what they make. It's a lot of fun!

For Easter you can get different shaped cutters. whatever ones you can find. Any toppings that are pastel colored would be great. Sprinkles, shredded carrot would be a healthy topping, etc.

Birthdays are the best! Make them in the shape of presents. Use frosting in there favorite colors.

The Forth of July make flags. With coconut, fresh blueberries and raspberries. Or even strawberry's.

Halloween you can get cat, pumpkin, or any other spooky shape you can find. Use black licorice or sprinkles. You can use anything green , orange, or red.

Thanksgiving is the biggest time for family. You can use turkey, leaves, or pilgrim shapes. Use toppings in the shades of yellows, orange, tan, etc. Healthy toppings would be sweet potatoes or squash. Smashed and flavored. With marshmallows on top.

Last but not least is Christmas. Get angels, trees, a nd candy canes. Use sprinkles or powdered sugar on the trees, for a snowy look, anything Christmas like.

So there are many ideas and you probably could find more of your own. I found this all to be extremely fun and creative. for the kids. Also if you have family up visiting with children. You could make it a morning holiday activity. So parents can relax and enjoy watching their children make food art. I hope you try one or all and make great memory's with your family!
