Here is one strategy that combines my experience writing for the web. Keep in mind that with conflicting obligations of school and family, I haven't had enough time to maximize these writing opportunities into a full-time income. However, these writing strategies bring in a considerable amount per month.
A long-term way to make extra change is to earn monthly revenue on articles published at Associated Content, to sell various article licenses at Constant Content, and to write articles, edit articles, and proof titles for Demand Studios. Earlier this spring, I read on Associated Content that AC was featured briefly on The View on ABC. It was exciting that AC could bring an author to national attention in the popular media.
The bottom line in freelance writing is that you have to produce frequently and promote your work. A blog is one way to get your name known in the web world. People who want to find more success with blogs need to study Internet marketing techniques (affiliates, link exchanges, SEO, and article marketing). Occasionally, new customers find you and ask you to produce articles because they discover your name in a place like Associated Content.
Freelance writers can also build a reading audience through Twitter and other social networking tools and by participating in forums on various topics. The trick is to find time to spend using social networking to expand your network of contacts. When people visit your blog, for example, they might also read your web articles because this extra research might tell them a little bit more about you. Another idea is to enter a writing competition and gain exposure when your book, short story, or poetry gets a bit of recognition from the contest. Some authors also create a blog through Amazon and get exposure by writing book reviews.
In a home-based business like freelance writing, you determine how much you make. Article writing has a huge potential, but it takes some experience to understand how to earn income this way. Reading tips from top writers is a good place to start rather than approaching this field from the perspective of Internet marketing experts.
A Lifelong Learner
Writing taps into the desire to be a lifelong learner. For people who did not read and research frequently before freelancing, a new desire to be a lifelong learner may take hold. I have learned so many things since becoming a freelance writer, and I already considered myself a lifelong learner. Keep writing for multiple venues and use Associated Content to earn long-term income from wide exposure on the Internet.
