Making the Transistion from Corporate World to Online Business

Being a Success No Matter What the Medium

People with illustrious professional careers in other businesses may have a well-defined advantage over the masses if they are "streetwise", but they certainly don't get that automatic advantage in cyberspace. There are lots of people who have been successful online who never graduated college or had a true 'white collar' position in the corporate world.

Now, it is certainly true when they say that the online mind set needed for success is unique. Online marketing is strikingly different from any other type of marketing and demands a simplistic and tactical process in order to produce results. For the seasoned pro, this can be very challenging.

Sadly, people with a distinguished educational background or have already had profitable careers in other vertical markets are often blinded by their success. Professionals who have found success offline tend to have a certain obstinacy, making it difficult to change old habits and learn what they really need to learn in order to make it online.

Inflexibility will slow down a person's success and severely dampen enthusiasm. While the seasoned professional is smart and experienced, if that professional isn't seasoned and experienced on the web, it won't make a difference. They'll still have to learn how things work on the Internet.

In a sentence, if someone hasn't had a successful online business, they're simply not successful, regardless of their past accomplishments. Those who are former professionals might have the wisdom necessary to jump ahead of the rest of the pack if they've had similar experiences, but if they don't concentrate on basics, they can fail just as easily as someone inexperienced in any type of career.

To be successful online, you have to reflect on your past achievements that made you successful in your chosen profession and keep in mind that any success is built around fundamentals. Acknowledging that the online world is different than any other and recognizing that certain basic steps are required are the main concepts that must be burned into your mind in order to succeed with an online business.

As soon as these steps are taken, the seasoned pro can accomplish nearly anything online. It is as simple as mixing creativity with persistence. A major key of common sense is listening to the experts and remaining neutral when assessing any concept or idea. If the idea or product is from a real honest-to-goodness expert, in other words someone who has been successful online, the separation from layman to professional lies in the simple fact the expert has actually done it, not just talked about it. It's far too easy to be critical of others and not focus on your own ideas. A real professional should never underestimate anyone who has succeeded in acquiring money online, since it's actually quite an accomplishment.

Try to avoid getting blinded by all the hype in any marketing campaign. Practically anything online has some level of pushiness to it. To a pro, this can be a serious irritant. Read between the lines and look at the idea, concept or product for the value it brings, and focus on benefits more than estimated savings or results.

A lot of skills you accumulate during your past career may be useful, but the most meaningful abilities will need to be learned if you haven't previously (and successfully) owned an online business. Just because you can do math in your head, have an MBA or had been a VP of sales at one time doesn't mean you can successfully make the transfer online--at least, not right away. A traditional education doesn't automatically mean success. The simple fact is, for most of us the only way to get that education is to sit at the feet of those who have blazed the trail before us--and succeeded.
