Making a TRON: Legacy Polymer Clay Motorbike Figure

Eloah James
Materials
Polymer clay, black
Fluorescent or glow-in-the-dark paint, light blue-green
Paintbrush, fine tip
Rolling mat
Clay tools, including awl, cutter, and ball

Forming
To make the wheels, roll the black clay into a barrel shape, about 2 inches long and 1 inch in diameter. Carefully cut this barrel in half, to make two 1 inch lengths. Gently smooth the edges of the barrel shapes until they are rounded like the tires of the bike. Use the ball to create depressions in the interior of the wheels. Use the top image displayed here as a guide (click thumbnail to enlarge). Roll out another bit of clay into a circle about 2 inches wide and ¼ inch thick and roll another into a square 2" x 2" x ¼". Cut each of these in half. Mold the half circles into crescent shapes to form the front wheel cover. Round the edges of the rectangles to create the rear wheel cover that goes around the rider's leg.

To make the rider, roll out clay into a 6 inch rope that tapers from about ½ inch thick to about 1/8 inch thick. Cut 2 inches off the thickest end to create the bar that attaches the wheels together. Use the ball to smooth this into place between the wheels you made earlier. Cut another 2 inches from the same end of the rope and form this into a slightly curved rectangle to create the rider's body. Using the picture as a guide, lay this in place and smooth down with the ball. Cut notches and grooves as shown. Cut another inch from the same end of rope and then cut that in half lengthwise, to create 2 thighs of the riders. Repeat this step to create the calves and then cut a smaller segment for the feet. Use the smallest section of the rope to create the arms. Roll one final bit of clay into a ball about ½ inch in diameter. Use this for the head. Press grooves into the clay in all the areas where you will paint the glowing lines.

Baking
Bake the piece according to package directions.

Painting
Carefully paint inside the grooves you created before baking. If desired, coat with an acrylic sealant.
