Making of a Writer - What Does it Take?

7 Tips on How to Prepare

Lindsey Russell
There is a lot of discussion on Associated Content on the business of writing. Underneath it all, what does it really take? Here are 7 tips on how to prepare to be a writer.

1. Write some everyday.

One of the best ways to prepare for the life of a writer is simply to dig in. Start writing something everyday. You can write articles for Associated Content everyday, or it can be as simple as keeping a traditional journal. The important thing is that you keep writing.

2. Ensure that you have a good educational foundation when it comes to English grammar.

If you don't have a good English and writing education to fall back on, take the time to do some research and learn it yourself. Even if you did receive a good education, you might be weak on some of the finer points of grammar. If so, you can easily find the information you need on-line. It is hard to become a writer if you don't have a good grasp of grammar.

3. Research writers and writing techniques. There is almost too much information on-line.

The Internet makes it easy to research various writers and writing techniques. Take time to do so. You will be surprised at what you learn. Almost all of the information is free. Many times a writer's website will provide insight to their creative process and they might even give you some ideas of your own.

4. Keep a dedicated time set aside for your writing.

Create a specific time every day that you sit down and write. The more routine you set with regards to your writing, the more likely you will be to keep at it. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to become a writer, so why make it any harder than it has to be? Once it is a routine, it will become second nature.

5. Take time to create a comfortable place to write; set aside computer and shelf space for your writing.

Your surroundings can really affect your writing. You will want to create a space that is personal, free of unnecessary distractions, and organized. Once you have the space set to your liking, you will also have to set aside dedicated space on your computer for your writing files. You may also want to include a bookshelf in your writing space. Not only will it provide space for books that can provide much needed inspiration, it will also provide you with space to keep hard copies of your work.

6. Read as much as you can.

Some of the best writers are prolific readers. If you are serious about becoming a writer, you also have to love to read. How else are you going to learn the best ways to hook your readers? The best way to learn is by thoroughly examining the work of others. Reading can provide untold inspiration for writers as well.

7. Connect with professional writers.

By utilizing blogs, websites such as Associated Content, as well as the personal websites of authors, you can get in touch with authors. Many of the published authors that contribute to Associated Content are more than willing to help you on your journey.

There is no great mystery to becoming a writer. You simply need the desire, the proper tools, and the will to do so.
