Making Your Years at Nevada State College a Blast

Drew Bush
This year it will be five years since I first attended Nevada State College (which I graduated from in 2009). I still remember the first day I started there and it was a whole new experience. Nevada State College is located in Henderson, Nevada near the beautiful Black Hills. It is only about ten minutes from Boulder City, Nevada (my home) and about twenty minutes from the Las Vegas Strip. While the college itself is in the middle of the desert, one does not have to drive far to find food and drinks and interesting places to hang out.

Nevada State College is located at 1125 Nevada State Drive in Henderson, Nevada. Just a quarter mile to the east of the college is a Shell gas station where you can eat at a sandwich shop. Also, take the U.S. 93/95 about 10 minutes northwest of the college to Horizon Drive where there is a chain of restaurants. In this complex is a Saxby's Coffee (72 West Horizon Ridge Pkwy) which not only has great coffee but also great pastries. Also in the same complex are a pizza restaurant and a yogurt shop. Many students from the school hang out here so it is also a great place to meet some new people.

If you have a long break between classes and don't want to drive all the way home, there are several recreational things to do. Only a matter of minutes from the school is the Clark County Heritage Museum. I have been to this museum on a number of occasions and it is quite a beautiful place. The Museum covers several acres and it is home to several houses that were built in Las Vegas during the 1940's, 1950's, and 1960's. You can go from house to house and tour the insides of each house. Also on the property is a train that you can go inside. It is a great place to go to unwind and it only costs a couple of dollars to get in. The museum is located at 1830 South Boulder Highway in Henderson, NV and is only a few minutes from the school. Just drive about a half mile east of the school to Boulder Highway and drive northwest until you come up to the museum on the right.

About 15 to 20 minutes from the college is Sunset Station, one of Las Vegas's premier hotel/casinos that are off the strip. If you are looking for something fun to do, Sunset Station has a number of restaurants, a movie theater (including IMAX), and clubs where one can enjoy some music and dancing. Sunset Station is located at 1301 West Sunset Road in Henderson, Nevada.

As of this time, Nevada State College does not have dorms or housing; however, there is housing very close to the college. One can choose from a number of apartment buildings. Click here for more on housing in and around the college.

Nevada State College has some great resources available to students to help them get through their years at the college. There is a state of the art tutoring center, an advising office where first year students can receive academic advising from a real professional, and several other resources. The college is a closely knit community. The college hosts several activities a year which allows students to get to know each other better. Pizza parties, a Halloween party, and Christmas activities are held each year. College does not only have to be about working and studying, but it is supposed to be fun too.

The college has some great professors who will stop at nothing to make sure you understand the material. They will make you work, but they are also very flexible with the student's schedules. Just be sure that you study the material that they tell you to focus on, and take it seriously.

I hope all of this advice helps. With these ideas and tips in mind, you should have more of an idea of what to expect as you begin your years of study at Nevada's only state college.
