Making Ziploc Omelettes

The Entire Family Will Love This Easy Recipe

Do you like omelettes but hate all the clean up afterwards? Do you not have enough time in the mornings to fix omelettes for the whole family? Well, bypass the clean up and have plenty of time to make the whole family breakfast with the Ziploc omelette. College students will especially enjoy this homemade omelette which is probably better than any cafeteria breakfast food.

To begin, gather all your supplies, Ziploc bags, eggs and all of the ingredients you wish to use to make your omelettes. Fill a pan with water and set it on the stove. Don't turn it on yet, we'll use that later.

The best part of this activity is the fact that the whole family can get involved. Crack two eggs and put them into the Ziploc bag (you may want to help the younger ones with this part). Close it up and squeeze and shake the eggs to mix them together. This process may take several minutes especially if you are just shaking the bag. I have found that shaking and squeezing is the best way to mix the eggs. Now, open the bag and add your favorite ingredients to the eggs. Squeeze as much air from the bag as you possibly can, close it and shake and squeeze again to mix the ingredients together. Some ingredients may take longer than others to mix into the eggs, so use some squeezing if you have to so everything is covered.

Once everyone has completed their omelette bag, you can use a marker to initial the bags so it'll be easy to tell which bag belongs to whom when the omelettes are finished. Now, you place the bags into the pan of water and turn it on high, or close to it. The omelettes are going to cook in the pan of water for about 13 minutes. Monitor the water however to make sure it doesn't overflow and burn someone. But for the most part, you'll have a free 13 minutes to do whatever you need to do!

Once the 13 minutes are up, remove the bags from the pan of water and set them on a plate to cool for a few seconds (I recommend not letting the younger ones participate in this part). Once you can safely touch the bags without burning yourself, open the bags and place the omelettes onto a plate one by one. They should slide out very easily.

Now you're set for a quick and tasty breakfast (or an excellent snack) that everyone will love. Imagine putting these together the night before and just having to wake up and pop the bags into a pan of water to cook. No mixing, no mess and you'll save yourself plenty of time. Hey, maybe you'll even get to sleep in!

  • Mix 2 eggs with the ingredients, labeling bags if there are more than one.
  • Cook for 13 minutes and the omelette will roll out of the bag onto a place easily.

We're college students and hated waiting in line at school to make these, so instead, we tried our own version, which meant we could do more than one at a time and it was easier that way.

I think you'll be fine if you just keep an eye on it. At the 13 minute mark, mine never look done when I'm staring at them, but after I give them a few minutes to cool and take it from the bag, it's always done.

Good luck! I hope you enjoy your omelette.

I've always wanted to try this, because it sounds fun and easy (and I can be a bit of an omelete retard, lol). I was just afraid of it not cooking all the way. But your article has given me hope to try it.
