Malcolm X's Daughter Living in Madison County, North Carolina
Malikah Shabazz Hiding Out from the Law in Mars Hill
Malikah Shabazz has been living inconspicuously in Mars Hill, North Carolina. Her anonymity came to an end when she was arrested and is set to appear in court on several outstanding warrants from New York. Personally, I find it even more astounding she lives less than 20 miles from my home in Leicester, North Carolina! Malikah Shabazz appeared in a Madison County court Tuesday, February 22, 2011. An attorney for Shabazz says she is not fighting extradition.
Associated Press reported, "Shabazz, 45, was arrested after an anonymous caller claimed Shabazz's daughter was not attending school. Department of Social Services investigators went to her Mars Hill home in western North Carolina, and authorities determined Shabazz had several outstanding warrants issued in 2009 in Queens, New York, that include charges for grand larceny, forgery and identity theft."
Associated Press further reported, "Shabazz stole the identity of a family friend who is the widow of a bodyguard who was with Malcolm X when he was assassinated at the Audubon Ballroom in New York City in February 1965, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said in a press release. She used the fake identity to charge more than $55,000 in the victim's name between August 2006 and November 2007."
Neighbors response to their fugitive Madison County resident wasn't what you would expect. When asked by the local news what they thought about Shabazz, residents in Mars Hill were proudly surprised to have such a well-known personality living in their quiet mountain town. One of the locals interviewed by WLOS said, "I had no idea that I was living in the same town with a famous Black activist's daughter. It's like living next door to a part of African-American history."
For now Milikah Shabazz remains in Mars Hill. Even though she has been estranged from her family they is still concern about her well being and the welfare of Shabazz's young daughter.

Post a CommentI understand Malcolm X was killed by his ex friends after he decided racism was wrong.
This was so interesting but a little sad too. This guy was one of my personal heroes.
wow! cool article ..seems like i remember he has a son who has popped up in the media afew times in the past.
Thanks Delicia! I was blown away to know that she was living less than 20 miles from us. We are use to seeing Gladys Knight and Andie MacDowell they live in the Asheville-Biltmore Forrest area but to know that she lived so close was an amazing story to wake up to. Thanks for the read.
Donna, just bring your coffee cup! There's always baked treats at Websterville Farm and Pub! Hey maybe we could ask Milikah before she's extradited back to New York for an exclusive neighborly interview?? Bake goods included. ;)
Wow, great report Deb, thanks!
Wow, such drama and intrigue in your farm town! Now, more reason besides scones and cinnamon rolls to visit! LOL! Watch out Deb, I'm coming south!
was completely intrigued by this news story! I called a friend who lives near Mars Hill to find out what was going on. She was just as surprised as I was! I thought this was an interesting bit of local news to share! Thanks for the comments!
Great reporting, Deb, I heard this on the news but didn't realize she was that close to you...
