Male Menopause: Real or Imagined?

Mood and Libido Not What They Use to Be?

In America, we've often put women's healthcare on the back burner while men take the lead. Many medical journals were created with men's health in mind.

Men are going to their Doctors seeking help for what some are calling male menopause. Not well defined menopause, like in women, however the symptoms are signaling that men may indeed have a menopausal time in life.

According to WebMD's article 'male menopause', a healthy male never runs out of the sperm (that's what makes testosterone). The swimmers can be produced into his eighties or longer if he remains healthy. The number one complaint associated with male menopause is lower libido, or a lack in sex drive. What's happening, some think, is a lowering of sperm production. Diagnosis is made by assessment with a physical exam, answering questions and providing a blood sample to check testosterone levels.

There are many reasons for this serious condition in which a man may find his libido turned down. Some men may have undiagnosed depression or other mental health issues while others may not be able to perform sexually due to the consumption of alcohol. Even smoking can cause dysfunction because the penile tissue needs blood flow to form an erection but smoking causes blood cells to constrict. Many men simply may not enjoy their spouse's company any longer. Therapy may be needed if he remains in denial. Then there are males who remain closeted gays. Fear can keep a man locked into his relationship for years without seeking any help when therapy may be the only way for some of these men to find solutions.

Those who want better performance in their bedrooms are seeking help despite their fears. Perhaps they came to the decision to see their doctor on their own or at their spouse's beckoning. Once diagnosis has been confirmed, the doctor may decide on a trial of testosterone. If meeting with satisfactory results a prescription will be given. Testosterone can be applied as a topical cream, injection or transdermal patch.

Male menopause is real and now is the time to conquer this change. Don't let another day pass you by wondering if your man enough. Go see your doctor and find out what is really going on. Your partner deserves all of you.
