Male Shih-Tzu Vs Female Shih-Tzu...Which One Do You Want?

Linda Stamberger
Choosing which dog to buy or adopt is an important decision, along with breed preference.

I have owned nothing but female Shih-Tzu's, and they have distinct female personalities. They are more emotional than the male, some say loving, though I don't think this is true, especially since I have never owned a male. The female Shih-Tzu gets female maladies; such as menses and even cramps. The males may have a higher mating drive than females; though the female heat cycle can be strong; especially when the dog is not spaded or "fixed."

Shih-Tzu owners take notice of your dog. They are very determined to urinate during walk time in different areas. Though this may not be a distinct character trait of the Shih-Tzu as a female, it is indeed part of their nature, as the males nature may be to mate. The female may enjoy getting out and marking her territory, but nuetering the pet will help in more ways than preventing unwanted puppies.

It is important to get the spay over with as soon as the female dog is old enough, for this will eliminate periods, and also help to prevent female disease in your dog; such as ovarian cancer and even some forms of breast cancer. The male dog may be neutered to prevent testicular disease. As always consult a vet about these things, and try to acquaint yourself with Shih-Tzu people that have both sexes of dogs, and see what they say about male vs female as a pet, and individual behavior.
