Male Virginity Test Clears 3 Rapists

Phan Thi Hong, an acupuncturist who lives in Hanoi, Vietnam, claims that she can detect whether a man is a virgin by looking at a specific part of his body. Going by this information, she has been credited with exonerating three convicted rapists and freeing them from prison.

Hong has a long history of practicing traditional medicine. She states that she first noted whether a man was a virgin by checking his pulse. Apparently, there is a difference in pulse if a man is virgin versus if he's had sex. She later noted that a man who is a virgin has a small red spot on the back of his ear. The spot disappears if the man has had sex and therefore lost his virginity.

While working in a Vietnamese hospital, Hong provided treatment to a prison inmate, Nguyen Dinh Kien, who had been accused of gang raping a 20-year old woman and was then serving a 16-year sentence. Hong noticed that Kien had the telltale red spot on the back of his year, and indicator that he had not had sex. Due to this physical feature, Hong began to campaign for a legal review of Kien's conviction.

Hong later examined two of Kein's alleged accomplices in the gang rape and found that they also carried the telltale red marks on the back of their ears. Based on this additional information, Hong demanded that the rape case be reviewed, going as far as threatening to light herself on fire if it was ignored. Her efforts paid off when Vietnamese President President Nguyen Minh Triet ordered that the rape case be re-examined.

While the red spot "proof" of virginity was not itself enough to overturn the rape case conviction, it was enough to eventually reopen the case. Due to investigation flaws, such as the fact that witness testimonies pointing to the men's innocence were not included in the case files, the three men were eventually released from prison. The men had already served 10 years in jail as part of their 16 year sentence.

Some doctors and acupuncturists are skeptical of Hong's "virginity test," believing that a red spot, or any other physical feature, is incapable of proving virginity. There is also the question of why Hong states that this virginity test applies only to males that have had heterosexual sex, but is not indicative for males who have engaged in homosexual sex or masturbation (i.e., such males remain virgins). The debate continues as to whether her ability is real or just a hoax, but the truth remains that her efforts have resulted in the freeing of three men accused of rape.
