Mama Mia: Pizza for the Obamas

Erinn Soule
When you're the president of the United States, anything goes, I suppose, apparently there is no exception when it comes to delivered pizza either! The last thing I want to do is bash our dear President, I think I am actually starting to like him...but...yes, there is a but here. Our President (White House really) flew in a special Chef...a Chef that was 860 miles away! Chris Sommers, 33, jetted into Washington from St Louis, Missouri, on Thursday with a suitcase full of dough, organic cheese and big giant pans to to prepare food for the Obama's and their staff, about 150 people worth. He had apparently been handpicked after the President had tasted his pizzas on the campaign trail last autumn. My question is this, Why?

This idea doesn't leave a good taste in my mouth at all, I mean seriously, we are in an economic crisis and our President is flying in world renowned (exaggeration) Chefs! I visited Washington DC last year and believe me, there are some poverty stricken areas and in those areas are "mom & pop" pizza shops. Why not employ a local pizzeria to do this function, keep the economy supported? I hate to say it, but I am outraged over this!

We bail out the auto industry, we bail out the banks and now we honor good chefs, while local businesses starve on their own downfall, shameful! I have always used the term, "must be nice" when referring to celebrities, public figures or even the rich, but I expect more, or should I say less, from our President who has been a big advocate of change, especially in the White House.

I do understand that living in the White House has its perks, but these should be perks of a different measure I think. The perks should be fantastic cars, butlers, nanny's, housekeepers, lawn keepers, security, cooks, nice furniture, nice jewelry, nice clothing and a fabulous paycheck...but random acts of kindness like a personal pizza delivery boy? Again, why?

All of the perks I mentioned above, involve a salary, a paycheck or some sort of income that is essentially generated back into our economy, right? Right. This kind of decision making or behavior just demonstrates foolishness and frivolity, is that even a word? Well who cares it is still frivolous! I'm mad, I'm mad at the President and the 1st Lady, who I absolutely adore, but I'm mad and you should be too! Just like foreign and outside truckers are taking the jobs of in house trucking jobs and legal citizens, the White House is now "out-sourcing" in a wrong way.

Interesting. I hope it was great pizza.

If I have to cut back to make ends meet, Obama can eat Little Caesar's and Pelosi can cut the booze. That goes for all Congress as well, on both sides of the aisle.

Oh and your style is too 'melodramatic' so people don't take it seriously. Check facts and you'll have a more believable piece, IMO.

"The perks should be fantastic cars, butlers, nanny's, housekeepers, lawn keepers, security, cooks, nice furniture, nice jewelry, nice clothing and a fabulous paycheck" - how are these any different than flying in a pizza chef? They all cost money. I have nothing against Obama flying in the pizza chef - there are usually ulterior reasons why, often reasons which benefit the area the guy comes from.

It is not unprecedented for a sitting President to request a specialty food from somewhere in the country. Additionally, Chris Sommers has met the President before and they have a mutual friend in common. It's also not outsourcing to put a talented businessman in the spotlight, especially one who has achieved so much in just a year in business in St. Louis.
