What is known, is that Daniel James Murray (no relation to the author) recently withdrew $85,000 from a bank in St. George, Utah.
He told the teller, "We are on a mission to kill the president of the United States," according to an article from CNN. The CNN article cited a criminal complaint filed in federal court in Utah.
This comment led to a manhunt across the country, culminating in his arrest at a casino in Laughlin, Nev. on Friday.
Murray, called "Cape Man" by his upstate New York neighbors, wears rimless glasses, a black hoodie, and an emotionless stare in a recent picture. He sports a scruffy beard that trails down his neck. He was known to like guns.
With the $85,000 he withdrew, Murray opened an account on May 19 at the Zions First National Bank.
"With all this mess going on under President Obama with banks and the economy, I'm sure if citizens happen to lose their money, they will rise up and we could see killing and deaths," he said, according to the criminal complaint.
He returned on May 27. Murray tried to withdraw $12,000, but since he did not have the proper identification, a teller denied him at first.
"Not to be disrespectful, but if I don't get this money, someone is going to die," Murray said, according to the complaint.
A bank manager was called-and apparently found him to be potentially dangerous-because he was allowed to withdraw the money without the proper identification.
According to CNN, Murray would not accept a check and demanded the money be given in bills no larger than $50.
"We are 94 million miles from the sun, and are in-between the sun and moon, and the eagle that flies between them and it's a giant step for mankind. ... I have traveled thousands of miles to be here and know things that are going to happen. ... the banking system will fail and people will die. ... there will be chaos in the world," Murray said, as reported in the complaint.
It was following this spiel that Murray made his threat against the president, according to the complaint.
It is unclear what Murray's motives may have been at this point.
A New York Daily News article reports that he often walked through his former neighborhood wearing a black cape and muttering to himself.
