Twenty-four year old Matthew Brace approached a maintenance man outside a convenience store gas station in Chicopee, Massachusetts on Monday, May 17, 2010. Brace offered his three month old infant daughter for sale to the maintenance worker in exchange for two 40 oz. bottles of beer, while the mother was inside the convenience store buying a pack of cigarettes.

The maintenance man quickly called police, who responded to the scene. They found Matthew Brace hiding behind a trash dumpster with the infant girl. Police took the child from Brace and the baby girl is now under the care and custody of the state welfare authorities.

On Tuesday, May 18th, a news conference was held by the Chicopee Police Department, at which time the Chicopee Police Chief said he has seen a lot of things in his law enforcement career, but described Brace's actions as "a new low."

Brace was not arrested at the scene, but was ordered into court on a charge of reckless endangerment. The mother has not been charged with any criminal offenses.
