A 43-year-old man was fatally shot Thursday night on Akron's northeast side. The victim, Abdulmahdi Al-Garawi, was found on the sidewalk in front of a house in the 300 block of Buckingham Street around 9:20 p.m. He was rushed to Akron City Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:30 p.m. Al-Garawi was shot once in the abdomen. An autopsy performed Friday by the Summit County Medical Examiner's department determined the shooting to be a homicide.

The Akron Police Department is investigating the murder. Anyone with information about this crime can leave an anonymous message on the Akron Police Department Web site (http://ci.akron.oh.us/ASP/tip.html) or by calling 330-375-2490.

Akron, located about 45 minutes south of downtown Cleveland, traditionally has had a low homicide rate. According to a 2003 FBI report, the city of 214,622 residents recorded 16 murders that year.
