Man Gunned Down in South Dallas, Texas

Guns, Gangs, Drugs, and Violence Continue to Plague South Dallas Neighborhoods

Earlier Monday morning a man was gunned down at the corner of S. Ervay and Holmes St. in South Dallas. As the new Dallas Independent School District main building and future elementary school is being to take shape, there is a plaguing problem in the neighborhood.

Earnest Gibson, age 55, of South Dallas, was a victim of drug related violence. After a drug deal gone wrong, Mr. Gibson was shot at by an unidentified vehicle. There were no eye witnesses to this violent act. Neighbors report hearing five continuous gun shots at random. The man died at the scene of the shooting.

Police have no suspects in question at this time 'nor do they have any leads, according to Dallas police chief, David Kunkle. "The incident proves to us (Dallas police Department) that this neighborhood is in fact going to need a true "makeover" before the new Dallas Independent School District building is completely finished," Officer Kunkle quoted.

Guns, drugs, gangs, and random acts of violence have been a main focus point in this South Dallas neighborhood where many people sell drugs to earn a living and a vast majority of people are drug users themselves, so random acts of violence are on the rise in this certain neighborhood and other surrounding neighborhoods as well.

Police officers frequent this part of the city, but there just is not enough police presence to lower the crime rate. South Dallas real estate contractors have been Trying to develop a new "identity" for South Dallas. An identity that beautifies this most run-down part of Dallas, Tx. However, in this reporter's opinion, the drug trafficking and using must stop and the violence needs to slow down or these contractors will never get these properties sold, thus wasting money.

One Dallas county resident told me that, "They would feel safer by sitting indoors at all times and not even go out to go to work." With all the chaos that plagues South Dallas this reporter is not even sure if this part of the city will be able to improve. I suppose it all depends on the community and how they will deal with certain situations such as this one not only for themselves, but for their children as well.

It is never to late to end violence on the city streets, already other particular parts of the city have been in a certain type of reconstruction. Formerly "bad" neighborhoods have transformed into the best neighborhoods in town. So the real question is this: Can South Dallas become a place where people would want to live and raise a family? In this reporter's opinion, only time will tell.

I am not exactly sure about changing a neighborhoods reputation, I just know that yeah, it can happen, I mean look at New York and how the Harlem Renaissance changed everything. It can happen, it just takes a lot of time. The first thing that needs to happen is the elimination of dallas guns.
