Man Loses Job Over Green Bay Tie

Jacob Horn
John Stone went to work on Monday at Webb Chevrolet (near the Chicago area) probably thinking that it would be the typical Monday. His Packers had just defeated the Bears on their way to the Super Bowl and he wore a Packers tie to work on Monday to celebrate. The problem was that his boss, Jerry Roberts, did not find any humor in the Packers tie. He had only been at work 30 minutes when Roberts asked him to take the tie off. Thinking he was joking, Stone instead went to help a customer. Roberts would later ask Stone again to take the tie off but it goes without saying that the tie never came off.

Let me begin by saying that this story is absolutely ridiculous on both ends. It is a shame that sports have come to mean so much to us that people are getting fired for wearing the opposing teams colors. With that being said, I really do not feel sorry for Stone. Anybody who would risk losing their job just so they can continue to wear the tie of their favorite team is absolutely crazy. I will stand my ground on some issues but that is one you can win.

I can also understand where Jerry Roberts is coming from here. I have no doubt that there are customers in the Chicago area who would refuse to buy a car from a person or a dealership where a Green Bay Packers tie is being worn. That could be the case on any day of the year, especially the day after a defeat at the Packers hands. Don't get me wrong, that might be ridiculous but you know it is true. Roberts is responsible for the numbers at Webb Chevrolet and a Packers tie is not good for the numbers.

I will conclude by stating what has already been said. This situation is crazy. A sports tie should not play this much of a role in any decision about a job and nobody should ever lose a job because they cannot swallow their pride when it comes to their team. I hope John Stone can afford to feed his family because I doubt the Packers are going to start paying his bills. Although, I will say it would be neat if the Packers took a contribution for him at the next practice. I am just glad Stone did not wear a Jay Cutler tie. Instead of losing his job he might have lost his life. And so goes the world of sports.
