Man Shot During the Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Philadelphia Movie Theater Shooting

Ronni Dee
Although I wouldn't dare venture out to a movie on Christmas day, some families call it tradition. For one family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, it will be an outing that will never be forgotten.

James Joseph Cialella Jr., of South Philadelphia, is accused of various charges after allegedly shooting a man in the arm. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the victim was watching the newest movie starring Brad Pitt, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, with his family when Cialella told them to quiet down. Cialella reportedly threw popcorn at the victim's son, leading to a verbal argument between the two men.

Cialella then got out of his seat and shot at the victim, hitting him in the left arm. The victim is now in stable condition and it was reported that there were no other injuries relating to the incident.

While this act is nearly inconceivable, it is made even worse given the time of year. Many questions will be brought up, along with theater safety concerns. Did the man have a permit or license to carry the gun he had concealed? Why did he have it with him at a theater? Were there previous problems in his personal life that lead him to such an act? Why on Christmas Day?

One thing is certain; a family is scarred forever. Perhaps they go to see a new movie every Christmas, perhaps it was the start of a new tradition. Either way, one person ruined a very special day.

Crime and acts of violence are never justified, but what will we learn about the man in the next few days? What drove him to this point? The biggest question of all may be: With the economy getting worse, the country in recession, and unemployment at an all time high, will senseless acts of violence such as this happen more often? Are people drawn to that edge where they do not consider the punishments of their actions? Is this type of horrendous behavior what this country has to look forward to as more and more Americans plummet into depression?

Unfortunately I have been hearing way too much on the news lately, especially for this time of year. As the economy worsens, will the crime rate rise?

I believe Anne Murray said it best with her song 'A Little Good News' when she sang 'We sure could use a little good news today'. Click here for the full song lyrics.

Road rage has been rampant for years.....theatre rage was bound to happen sooner or later. I wonder when, after buying your ticket, you will have to go through a metal detector prior to taking your seat? I'm sure as soon as the lawsuit in this case is settled. Philadelphia of all places, the seat of brotherly love. With the price of movie tickets skyrocketing, may the theatres simply need to have a red button on the seats for those that wish to critique movies as they are watching. A rather extreme reaction and perhaps our news media isn't again painting the entire picture here. It was a good movie, but wouldn't getting the manager have been a little more constructive with a far better result? Perhaps he should have waiting until it came out on video?

The problem with people - even intelligent people - is that emotion clouds logic. There's that part of the brain that really doesn't care what the right decision is or what is good for the long term. Pride and short-term 'vision' always end up putting people in bad spots.

Not only did the guy not quiet down the family, he made it louder and managed to ruin the rest of his life over a movie starring Brad Pitt. That's why pride is the seventh deadly sin?
