Managing a Dollar Store

Melvin Richardson
There are a certain number of industries that are doing exceptional business during these rough economic times. Wal-Mart and McDonalds seem to be leading the charge when it comes to outstanding sales. If you notice their main selling point is price. Wal-Mart is consistently cutting and lowering the price of goods and services far below what their competitors are charging. McDonalds is known for it's value meals. Everyone is looking to hold on to their hard earned money and make every penny count when ever and where ever they can. One other area that is doing great are the dollar stores.

When you shop at a dollar store practically everything there is one dollar. You may even find some name brand products which may cost a little more but even they are less than what you would pay at other retail outlets. These types of stores really allow customers to save a significant amount of money when the budget is tight.

If the majority of the products are selling for one dollar you are probably wondering how they manage to make a profit. These stores can stay in business if they are located in an area that has a high volume of traffic.

There are other tactics they use that help them to operate efficiently and effectively and cut expense as well. Have you ever shopped at a Costco or a Sam's club? You can save quite a bit of money if you purchase bulk items at these stores. Once you stock up on some needed merchandise you don't have to shop for awhile. The dollar stores employ a similar strategy. They purchase in bulk. They seek out those manufacturers that have surpluses on hand and offer to purchase in bulk quantities. Whatever the wholesale price is buyers' can get it slashed to next to nothing if they buy in bulk.

If you go into a dollar store it's not uncommon to see the manager stocking the shelves or functioning as a cashier. Managers will train their employees to perform two or three different job duties. This allows them to slash payroll expenses. If they don't have to hire an employee for every single job duty then they can save a significant amount of money. When you factor in salaries, benefits, time off and vacation these savings can be quite extensive. Cross training is worth the time and effort in the long run when everyone in the store is able to perform two or three job duties. When store managers are able to cut costs and expenses in this manner they are able to maintain the low prices that they charge their customers.

Dollar stores are able to maintain really lost prices on select and specialty items that would cost a significant amount of money elsewhere. By diversifying their products they are able to maintain good volume and make a profit. Just by following a few simple strategies and techniques dollar stores are able to make profits and function
