Overcoming Obstacles Working from Home

Laurie Childree
Working is a fact of life. There are a few people that have the choice of working from their home to support their family in order to avoid sacrificing time with them. There are times when this seems to be easier said than done as work and home are conflicting at times. Managing a home when you work from home can be difficult but it is not impossible.

The Biggest Difference

Those that leave the home to work usually indulge in the much needed luxury of day care. Day care allows those working outside the home to go to work and run errands without having to worry about interruptions or cleaning up messes during the work day. Most work places are not child friendly so an increasing number of people are choosing to work from home.

When you work from home not only do you have to deal with work you have to deal with the managing of the home. At times this can be overwhelming because there will be those that refuse to acknowledge that you work simply because you are at home. There are techniques that can aid you in the efforts to manage the home while working from the home.

Organization

It is important to be organized when working from home to ensure that work and home life do not get confused. Overlapping these areas can cause things to get neglected because they ended up in the wrong place. Even though you are at home there is no reason that work and home life can not be kept somewhat separate. Starting with a work area that contains nothing but work related items will help to prevent things from getting lost or ending up with the family items and being overlooked.

Working Hours

It doesn't matter when you work as long as you have working hours. The purpose of working from home is in part to have the ability to set your own schedule. Once you sit down for work ideally you will not be disturbed for however long you have decided to work. In order to make this a reality when you have small children at home you might choose to work either before they get up or after they have gone to bed.

Prioritizing

There have to be priorities set for home and work. Determining what takes priority is sometimes difficult. Work priorities are set according to the amount of expenses that have to be paid each month. Those that work from home have an option that those in traditional employment settings do not have; they are able to determine just how many hours they will spend working during any given day. Expenses such as housing, utilities, food and clothing are all taken into consideration when those that work from home are determining how much work they have to do.

Home life has to be prioritized to when working from home. The purpose of working from home is to ensure that family is not sacrificed. Appointment and events for the children in the home take priority which means that work schedules are rearranged to ensure that all of these things are taken care of.

Managing a home while you work from home is difficult although not impossible with a little effort at prioritizing and organization.
