Managing Pain

Knowing What Caused it Sometimes Helps

David A. Reinstein, LCSW

A sharp contusion
Can bring on confusion
When the source of attack
Remains unknown -
It is somehow easier
To deal with the pain
When we are able to explain
Why we are hurting
And from whence the seed
Of discomfort
Was originally sown.

Less knowledge, more hurt;
The awareness is curt
But most often true.
To sit back or assert
And with courage to flirt
With added resilience
We become imbued.
Like cleaning our lenses
Our vision inward is
More clearly viewed.

Pain is never desired,
The wish to0 be well is inspired
Whenever we feel otherwise;
A tad of introspection
And some honest reflection
May qualm the part of the pain
Powered by ignorance
Or lies.

    Knowledge of the source of the pain, physical and emotional, can be an important step toward coping and calming.
