It wasn't until petting him some 1-2 weeks later that I noticed that his skin was very flaky and slightly oozing in a couple spots. The very first thought that came to my mind was that he had been bitten by something and it was infected...but this looked (and felt) differently than an animal bite I'd seen before.
I rubbed some Neosporin on him in hopes that it would get better. Needless to say...it did not. The oozing stopped, or so I thought...but Rusty was losing hair (from either scratching or licking the same spot over and over). So I decided I'd better call my vet. I described what was happening and told him now there was a bit of a "rotting flesh" smell. He told me it was definitely MANGE and explained the treatment process to me. They would put him in a "dip" that costs an upwards of $1000 dollars. I almost fell out in my floor. I was 23 at the time, just begging my life with soon to be husband, had a mortgage payment, cars, typical bills. $1000 dollars for a vet bill seemed impossible.
So I took to the Internet! I researched for a couple days about this and that, natural remedies, costly remedies, old "wives tales" remedies...just about anything anyone could come up with. I mixed and matched from here and there...and the solution I came up with was fantastic!!!! Rusty was completely cured within ONE WEEK. I took him to see our vet and he tested negative for Mange! His hair started growing back that week and was fully back to normal within a couple weeks.
I had heard people all the time say that borax can kill fleas. When we were overrun by them, I bought a box of borax and sprinkled it EVERYWHERE. The fleas did not die...I figured if I got my pets on some flea meds, they would all die off eventually...so I just threw the Borax up on a shelf in my laundry room
I also read that night that Garlic cloves and garlic salt can rid a dog of worms....
So I mixed my knowledge of that with a theory....when I was little, my mother would always use Peroxide on any cuts and scraps and what not that I may have acquired to clean them and keep them from getting infected. So I was sitting at my desk, probing my brain for a way to make Rusty better, and it hit me like a ton of bricks. (I can thank my love of science for this one!) I could use a mixture of Hydrogen Peroxide and perhaps Borax (if they say it kills fleas, surely it can kill smaller pests) Peroxide to clean it up, Borax to kill the Mange critters. Than I had my "AH HA" moment. The peroxide would soak the borax and that could cause it to penetrate a surface. Borax WOULD kill fleas....it needed to penetrate the couch, bed, carpet, etc. instead of just laying on top of it. So I assumed....surely the borax/peroxide mix would penetrate Rusty's skin and then I can rid him of his "pest" problem.
So I ran out to the store and grabbed 2 of the small bottles of Hydrogen Peroxide (.39 cents each!!!!!) and a cheap spray bottle. My grand total $2.11.
I hurried home and I grabbed the garlic salt out of the spice rack (what the heck, it was worth a try). I took everything in the bathroom and I started the preparations.
I was a little bit scared of pouring an entire non-diluted bottle of peroxide on my baby boy, so I mixed it. 1 part peroxide, 2 parts water. In other words...I poured the entire bottle of peroxide into the bucket, followed by 2 (of the peroxide bottle) filled with water. I wasn't sure on the measurement for the Borax, so I just played it by ear...I mixed in enough to where it just barely stopped dissolving in the mixture of water/peroxide. It was approx. 2 hefty spoon fulls. And then I sprinkled in a little bit of the garlic salt just because! (It was a very little bit)
I filled the bathtub just enough to where the water would cover Rusty's feet while he was in there and I poured a tiny bit of the mixture into the tub and swooshed it around (to make sure I got his feet).
I poured the entire mixture over Rusty's body...and used the squirt bottle for under his belly and underarms, under tails, etc...and rubbed it in good around his head and ears. I DID NOT rinse him or DRY him....I just let that stuff soak in and keep on soaking until he naturally dried!
The NEXT DAY there was no more oozing or bad smell. I was completely shocked!!! I grabbed the squirt bottle and I sprayed him again from head to toe....just for added effect.
Within ONE WEEK there were absolutely ZERO sign of any mange left on him. He was still missing hair, but even that was barely starting to peek through again. After about 2 1/2 weeks he had completely regrown his hair and to this day I cannot tell where the nasty pests had been.
(AND, after spraying my entire home with the mixture in the bottle and waiting about a week...we were completely FLEA FREE. I will NEVER buy flea meds again, EVER!)
Here it is again:
1 bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide
2 Bottles of Water
2 tbsp of Borax
Mix until almost all dissolved...once it becomes saturated, it will stop dissolving, then you have enough! I have been using this method for just over a year now and we have been parasite and flea free the entire time!
Hope this is helpful for anyone who's pets are suffering from any form of the Mange parasite or fleas!!

Post a CommentKaz inhalent steam activation has over half of the oils you discuss for natural treatment of fleas. Primary is eucalyptus in a mineral oil base. I used an eye dropper to apply it to fur. The fleas came off skin of the dog and were jumping off. they really don't like it. Thank you. Salt is on the floors.
Awesome. trying today. Chemical topicals made cats sick and they still have fleas.
I am a little leary about using the borax would this be effective without it?
