Mangled

Susan Owens
Mangled, tattered, warn and used
Bump-bump-thump
Goes the heart you bruised
Broken, torn, lost and abused
Bump-bump-thump
Goes the heart you ruined

I stand and stare
A look I give to nothing at all
I reminisce on the fall

This empire once stood so tall
Does no longer exist, not at all
Once built with joy and glee
And everything that happiness could bring
Sat upon a foundation of pride

How could I shut my eyes
While you tear away
Brick by brick
A door
The floor
One by one you tore it down
Rooftop to ground
Until all that remained
The sad ruins of a dream
