Manistee, Michigan: A Beautiful and Quaint Travel Destination

Traveling to Michigan's North Coast

Kimberly Cummings
Manistee, Michigan, is one of the most quaint little peaceful communities that I know, my best friend lives in Manistee and for a short time I stayed up there with her after my divorce years ago. Manistee sits on Michigan's north coast, about midway up the state. I remember when I first arrived in Manistee to stay with my friend of over 20 years, I was in love with the serenity of the community and their welcoming nature. Manistee has a wonderful massive river walk that winds itself down the waterfront. The town also is filled with beautiful small Victorian shops and lots of mom and pop stores. It is the type of community in which everyone knows everybody and people take time to speak and be courteous each day.

Manistee is a community that has almost everything a large amount of fishing, a quaint and unique downtown district, a huge casino, Little River Casino & Resort for entertainment and plenty of top of the line golf courses including Arcadia Bluffs which is well known to most golf enthusiasts.

Along with the community of Manistee, Manistee County is best known for its superb fishing which includes its salmon and breathtaking rainbow trout production. Northern Michigan has always been known for its forests and waterways and even though the winters can be harsh in some areas the hunting and fishing in this part of the United States is what every sportsman dreams of. While sitting on the back-porch of my friends home I saw a bobcat meander through the yard, as well as a whole flock of wild turkeys. Just as later in the afternoon while driving to town we easily ran across a big elk walking down her small road looking as if he had not a care in the world.

Actually the whole area of Manistee is charming, with its winding tree lined roadways, waterway drawbridge and gorgeous beach areas fully equipped with some of the most beautiful and an endearing lighthouse.

Manistee National Forest includes a vast forest, several scenic rivers, campgrounds and plenty of hiking areas. This part of Michigan is great for any outdoorsman looking for perfect vacation spots in which to camp, kayak or any other recreational activity.

Manistee is located on US 31 just off of Manistee Lake and not far from Lake Michigan. Manistee has many places to see and things to do including many festivals, sporting events, fishing tournaments, fairs and holiday celebrations.
