Alexander made his Mets debut on April 2, 1997 against the San Diego Padres when he replaced 2nd baseman Carlos Baerga. In his first at bat as a Met he singled to centerfield.
Injuries hampered much of his time with the Mets and he hit just .246 with 2 home runs and 15 runs batted in before he was traded to the Chicago Cubs on August 8 along with Mark Clark and Lance Johnson in exchange for Turk Wendell, Brian McRae and Mel Rojas.
