Manny Ramirez Headed to the Chicago White Sox
Slugger Claimed on Waivers, Will Leave the Los Angeles Dodgers
Should they pack it in, or should they shoot for the playoffs?
They made their decision for the playoffs Monday, as they acquired Manny Ramirez on a straight waiver claim from the Los Angeles Dodgers. It remains to be seen if a trade is to be worked out, as the White Sox may opt to send players back to the Dodgers in exchange for paying less of the $3.825 million left on Ramirez's two-year, $45 million contract.
Being 10 games out of a playoff spot, the Dodgers have likely packed it in for this season. By letting go of Manny Ramirez, they will save a considerable amount of money that can be used for next season.
In his last game as a Dodger, Ramirez was ejected. He was pinch hitting in the top of the sixth. He has not started the last four games for the Dodgers.
Although Ramirez is batting .311, he only has eight home runs and 40 RBIs, mainly due to his injuries. He has three stints on the DL this season, which means that he will probably take over the DH spot if he lands in Chicago.
Ramirez, a 12-time All Star, went to Los Angeles from Boston in a trade two seasons past. He was an instant favorite, as he performed extremely well down the stretch. This led to his contract extension. Unfortunately, injuries and a failed drug test have made this season a lot less memorable for the slugger. He last spoke to reporters in spring training, saying that this would be his last year in Dodger blue.
As for the White Sox, this means that they will receive another potent bat in their lineup. US Cellular Park, the home ballpark of the White Sox, is a much more hitter-friendly place than Chavez Ravine, so Ramirez may rediscover his power stroke with this move. Nevertheless, the Minnesota Twins are still an extremely powerful team, and the White Sox will need all the help they can get to catch up and get that playoff berth.
