Telescoping and Non-Telescoping Styles

Manual polesaws are easy to use. They are handy, efficient and take less time than electric or power-driven chain saws. Manual pole saws are also safer.

Use of manual pole saw:

Tree trimming can be a year-round affair. Using a manual pole saw is easy, quick and allows routine chores to be completed in a timely manner. Lower limbs are especially annoying while mowing and almost anyone can use a manual pole saw. It is especially handy for older citizens and less dangerous than electric or power driven chain saws.

Manual pole saw versus electric or power driven saws:

The best thing about the manual pole saw is the user does not have to prepare to use it. No electric cords to carry, uncoil, plug in and "string out" for many feet. With a manual pole saw there is no "starting" necessary as with a power driven saw. Most people are not capable of even starting a power chain saw, and they are heavy and dangerous.

Safety tips for using a manual pole saw:

1 - Wear safety glasses. While cutting the limb, saw dust will usually "rain" down on you.

2 - Handle the saw carefully. The blade is extremely sharp and dangerous.

3 - Remove any smaller limbs in the way of reaching the limb to be cut.

4 - Locate the limb to be cut and position yourself out of danger when the limb falls. Do not stand directly under the limb being cut.

5 -To prevent the bark from stripping down the trunk, make a cut on the bottom of the limb before proceeding.

6 - Make a clean cut to assure the health of the tree and not allow insects to penetrate the cut.

7 - Sweep away saw dust on the blades' teeth to keep it clean and cutting with maximum efficiency.

8 - Use a drop of WD-40 on styles with loppers to improve movement in the cutting blade.

9 - Use a professional tree trimmer on trees with limbs larger than 4" diameter or higher than the pole saw will reach.

Conclusion:

A manual pole saw is a necessary addition to the tools needed by a property owner with mature trees. Manual pole saws can be located at local hardware stores and on Amazon. Amazon offers free 2-day shipping. Prices range from $32 for a non-telescoping saw to $90 for a telescoping saw with limb loppers. Replacement blades are about $8.

Electric and power driven chain saws have a purpose, but for most homeowners the manual pole saw is all that is needed to maintain mature trees.
