Stays in Bed for Ceremony and Reception

The Guinness Book World Record holder for World's Heaviest Man married his girlfriend this Sunday in Monterrey, Mexico. Manuel Uribe and Claudia Solis were married in front of 400 guests and a TV crew on hand to cover the event. Uribe and Solis have been dating for four years, and have been engaged for the past two years. Uribe, 43, is a former mechanic and Solis, 38, is a hairdresser.

Uribe won the title of Heaviest Man in 2006 when he weighed in at 1,230 pounds. He reports that he has lost more than 550 pounds in the past two years with his fiance's help. Despite cutting his weight in half, Uribe was still unable to leave his bed for the ceremony. He has been bedridden for the past six years due to his medical conditions.

Uribe's bed was decorated with flowers and bows and loaded onto a flatbed truck which towed him through the streets of Monterrey to the ceremony. Was dress in a white shirt and a white sheet that he wrapped around his lower half. His bride wore a strapless ivory dress and a sparkling tiara.

After a public plea for help losing weight in 2006, Uribe received offers from nutritionists and weight loss surgeons from around the world. Uribe turned down an offer for free gastric bypass surgery from a physician in Italy. Uribe ultimately chose to lose the weight without surgical assistance. He credits The Zone Diet with helping him to lose nearly half of his body weight. A menu of meat and buttered vegetables was served to the guests. A five-tiered wedding cake was also featured at the celebration, but Uribe didn't partake in it, stating that he was sticking to his diet. Uribe hopes to reach his goal weight of 220 pounds in the next few years.

Earlier this year, Uribe reported that it was his goal to be able to stand up at the altar for his wedding ceremony, but he was unable to achieve it before the October 26th ceremony. Uribe was unable to leave his bed for the couple's first dance, but Solis stood next to Uribe's bed and held his hand while she swayed to the music.

Uribe recently announced that he has established the "Manual Uribe Foundation" dedicated to educated Mexican people about nutrition and obesity problems. A film crew from the Discovery Channel attended the ceremony to record it for an upcoming documentary about that follows a year in Uribe's life.

Uribe recently petitioned the Guinness Book of World Records to award him the new title of "Biggest Weight Loser" in history. This record has not yet been certified.

Maybe if Manuel would have agreed to have the gastric bypass surgery he was offered, he would have been able to stand at his own wedding. Even after Claudia begged him to get it done, he didn't agree. The least he could have done for her was to get the surgery after everything she does for him. What a prick you are, Manuel!

America is not the healthiest nation, but we do have the ability to chose what we eat. I think parents are responsible for teaching their children how to eat healthy and to avoid fast food all together! There is not one good thing that comes from fast food, other than convenience. Great article, I hope this man is able to lose the weight and keep it off. I think he needs to come to the realization that he made the choice to eat that much food because after the pounds are off those fast food restaurants will still be there. Great topic!

Wow! I had heard that he grew up in the US, but I hadn't heard that he blamed living here for his weight gain!

I watched an episode on TLC about this guy. I loved how he blamed his move to Texas for his weight gain. He said something about how it was America's fault because there were so many fast food restaurants near where he lived. Sorry, I'm not a big fan of someone who won't take responsibility for his own actions.

Thanks jcorn!!! Can you imagine losing 560 pounds? I should've included another piece in the story about how another man in Uribe's town who weighs over 500 pounds has now enlisted Uribe's help to lose weight! It's pretty cool!

You wrote about this so well and I found it very inspiring to discover that Mr. Uribe lost 560 pounds. I wish him success as he strives to reach his goals and admire his willingness to keep trying. No matter how much someone weighs, weight loss can be a difficult challenge and I confess I'd be tempted to give up if I weighed over 1200 pounds. I hope every pound lost gives him a chance to escape from being trapped in his bed and that he has a longer, healthier life - since that seems to be his own goal.
