Many Ways to Enjoy Your Oatmeal More

Add One or Two Tasty, Nutritious Items

Janice Meyer
There are many ways to give oatmeal a real boost - a more tasty and healthful experience. The oatmeal alone is great, but you can add a lot of different ingredients that make it an awesome eating experience. Below are listed some ways to enjoy your oatmeal more, and to also receive excellent nourishment from this wholesome grain:

• I like to get my oatmeal when it is just freshly cooked and quite hot. Then I put butter or margarine on it so it melts quickly. The secret here is to lightly salt the top of the oatmeal, preferably using sea salt. The sea salt does not taste as salty as regular salt, especially if you happen to over salt. This is delicious.

• Another way to enjoy oatmeal is to sprinkle fresh or frozen (thawed) blueberries over it while it is still warm. Then stir them in with any juice that remains. Sprinkle plain sugar or brown sugar over the top, add a little milk and stir again. The blueberries add a lot of excellent nutrition, including antioxidants. They are low in calories, with lutein, beta carotene, Vitamin C and dietary fiber.

• Oatmeal can also be enjoyed with a light coat of butter or margarine while it is still warm. Next, add some brown sugar on top. If you are counting calories, go lightly on the brown sugar. Of course, you can also sprinkle plain white sugar on top if you do not care for brown sugar, or find it too sweet or filling. Add some milk and enjoy.

• If you like nuts such as walnuts, pecans or almonds, you can add them to your oatmeal. There are some others you can use also. I find it best to break them up into small pieces; do not grind them, as that makes them into a meal-like texture, and you would not experience the great nutty taste of these morsels. Add milk according to your taste.

• Bananas are another treat to make your breakfast tastier, even with the wholesome oatmeal. Slice or chunk them on top of warm or hot oatmeal. This is also delicious with honey lightly poured over the oatmeal and bananas. Here, it seems a few small morsels of pecans or almonds would add to a tasty and nutritious dish.

• Fresh or frozen berries of almost any kind are an excellent addition to oatmeal. My favorite is strawberries, although red and black raspberries are also near the top. Black berries are especially good when they have ripened well. I can find most berries locally in a frozen state year around. Again, add your choice of sugar (brown or white) and milk and enjoy.

• Many people like raisins with their oatmeal. The raisins are also a great source of antioxidants and dietary fiber. They flavor up the oatmeal so well without being overly sweet. A little sugar and milk helps to round off the delicious taste of the raisins mixed with oatmeal, and adds to the enjoyment of each bite. They make a great combination that is rather unique.

• Try some marmalade, jam or jelly with your oatmeal. Choose your favorite flavor and possibly a few small morsels of pecans. The pecans are one of my favorites in the nut family. By mixing some of these suggestions, you may come up with something you truly love. You might tire of the same additions over and over, so try some new ones and you might find a keeper.

• Oatmeal is a wholesome food on its own, but adding other nutrients and vitamin-enriched food items can add to its taste and nourishing qualities. Sweet rolls cut into small pieces would definitely taste good mixed with oatmeal. Or, you could just drop the bread pieces over the top. If you have a real sweet tooth on a particular day, drizzle a bit of honey over the sweet bread, add a little milk and enjoy. This one is not especially full of nutrients, although honey is somewhat nourishing. It makes for a delicious breakfast.

• Applesauce can be a most nutritious and delicious mixture with oatmeal. Applesauce is a great nutrient-filled fruit with dietary fiber. You might want to sprinkle some cinnamon and a little sugar over it and then add some milk. This sounds so good, I may try it tomorrow morning. Don't forget, you could try this with a small sprinkle of raisons also.

Important Note: It is possible to enjoy these various oatmeal additions with one important change. If you are diabetic, or just trying to lose weight, you can add a sweetener that has no sugar. There are several different ones that should be available in your favorite supermarket.
