Maple Pecan Crisp Cereal Review

Description

Maple Pecan Crisp is one of the cereals that is usually found in health food stores and natural sections of grocery stores. It has 70% organic ingredients and has no added wheat. It consists mainly of corn flakes, oat clusters (which are like pieces of granola) and pecans. There are seven servings in the 14-oz box. It is vegan cereal and is grown and processed without GMOs. I paid $3.69 for the box.

Some ingredients listed on the box, which I find to be an interesting combination are: cinnamon bark, turmeric (for color), purple carrot juice (for color), organic ginger root, organic cardamom seed, organic black pepper, organic clove bud. With those ingredients, you might think that the cereal would have an Indian food flavor to it, but it doesn't.

For those who care about the environment, the box is made with 100% recycled paper and is printed with environmentally friendly vegetable-based inks. Also noteworthy is that 10% of the profits of the company go to organizations which are working for peace.

Nutrition Information

The front of the box states that the cereal has pure maple syrup. The 3rd ingredient listed is organic milled cane sugar with organic maple syrup being the 8th ingredient listed, right after organic barley malt syrup. Another sweetener listed is brown rice syrup, which makes for a total of four different sweeteners. Even with all of these sweeteners, the total grams of sugar are listed at only 9 grams per serving.

There are also 4 grams of protein listed along with 2 grams of fiber per serving. A one-cup serving has 210 calories. One serving provides a daily value of 2% of Vitamin A and Calcium, and 6% of Iron. These amounts may seem low but that's because the company doesn't add vitamins to their cereals like some companies do. You're getting the actual nutrition that comes in the ingredients.

Taste

I ate this with rice milk and thought it tasted very good. I could definitely taste a sweet, maple flavor. The sweetness and maple flavor seems to come from the oat clusters. The less-sweet corn flakes nicely offset the sweetness of the clusters. The chunks of pecan were very visible and I could see several of them in a bowl although I can't say that I actually tasted the pecans as I ate the cereal. I found that the cereal stayed reasonably crunchy until I got to the bottom of the bowl rather than getting soggy. I also tasted the dry cereal out of the box but found that I prefer the cereal with milk.

Final Analysis

I felt that this was a tasty cereal with an interesting flavor although I'm not sure how much healthier it is than some of the cereals in the regular grocery aisle. I prefer to purchase cereals that are not made with milled sugar, so I am disappointed that at the very least, this cereal wasn't made with evaporated cane juice or better yet, just barley malt, maple syrup and brown rice syrup. Overall, based on the fact that this cereal is mostly organic and has an environmentally friendly box, I feel that it is a better choice than some other more popular cereals.
