Maple Pecan Granola from Sweet Home Farm Review

This Granola Tasted Good but it Did Not Have the Kind of Nutrition Facts I Had Hoped For

I recently started buying granola in a Tetra Pak, or half-gallon milk-like carton. I have always been a fan of granola and was intrigued by this granola because it came in such a carton and was only about three dollars. There were several different varieties but the first one that I tried was the Maple Pecan Granola from Sweet Home Farm. After trying this granola I was intrigued to try the other varieties that the company had to offer, and here is why.

I really liked that the Maple Pecan Granola from Sweet Home Farm came in the half-gallon container. This made it easier to store in cupboards that were not long enough to hold traditional-sized cereal boxes, but I was less pleased with the nutrition facts. The actual granola container held twenty and a half ounces of granola, or about eleven servings. Each serving was two-thirds of a cup and contained two hundred and forty calories. There was seventy milligrams of sodium in every serving as well as forty grams of carbohydrates, three grams of fiber, fourteen grams of sugars and five grams of protein. A serving size of the granola also listed two percent for calcium and eight percent for iron. After reviewing the nutrition and ingredients that came with this breakfast item I was disappointed that it was not enriched.

The ingredients of the Sweet Home Farm Maple Pecan Granola were rolled oats, milled can sugar, rice flour, vegetable oil that was either canola, safflower and/or sunflower oil, maple syrup, cornstarch, pecans, honey, natural flavor and salt. I was glad to see that there was not any high fructose corn syrup or hydrogenated oils among the ingredients. Still, not being enriched I decided that this breakfast item was better as a snack item. So I enjoyed a bowl in the evening after dinner as a dessert, and as part of a breakfast that consisted of other foods. Even though I used it as a dessert I did not think that it was too sweet to enjoy as a snack or breakfast.

Although it turned out that the Sweet Home Farm Maple Pecan Granola was not enriched it did taste really good. Normally I am not the biggest fan of maple syrup but I did enjoy this particular granola's taste. This was the first granola cereal that I had tried that had a dominant maple taste but in the past I have gotten Peace Cereal Organic Maple Pecan Cereal and Healthy Valley Organic Multigrain Maple Honey Nut Square-Ems Cereal. I imagine that at three dollars a box I will get this granola again from time to time to have a nice snack on hand. I would recommend it as a snack and as a breakfast item to anyone who did not mind that it was not an enriched cereal.
