Similar to its predecessors, Luxor 5th Passage delivers stage-by stage marble based gameplay at its core, once again set to an ancient Egyptian theme. Although story has been pushed aside for puzzle play, when starting off players still have the choice of enjoying the adventure mode, or simply jumping right into the action in Blast Mode.
In adventure mode, there isn't much of a story-line to be followed; that is, compared to other titles in the franchise or genre. There aren't a cast of characters, and there are no involved quests, or dramatic cut-scenes to interfere with the core purpose. Simply put, on-screen text prompts guide users from challenge to challenge in effort to save ancient Egypt in straight forward marble popping play. While in this mode, players must wield the winged-scarab shooter and travel one-by-one through 100 stages that are scattered across a map of the land. The core gameplay formula itself, destroy the incoming marbles before it's too late, generally hasn't changed. The marbles of various colors will descend upon the player along a predetermined track. While shooting, marbles can be destroyed by matching colors, and a variety of power-ups such as the electo-marble, the fire-marble, and the black hole can be used to enhance play by destroying many of the marbles at once. The traditional style of play found in past titles will both entice new comers to the series, and satisfy those that are familiar with the other Luxor games.
In the new Blast mode, players have the opportunity to fore-go what little story exists in the game by skipping the adventure and diving straight into the free-style marble shooting gameplay. In this mode players must go wild with the trigger finger and grab as many points as possible before time runs out.
Fans of the franchise will recognize games of the past, and enjoy playing People's Choice, a seemingly random collection of favorite challenges and puzzles from the prior titles. Although some gamers may find their personal favorites missing, there is a wide e enough variety and content for ample enjoyment.
