Marc Mezvinsky, Chelsea Clinton and Other Political Engagements of Note

Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezinsky Announce Their Engagement to Family and Friends Via Email

Chelsea Clinton, the 29-year-old daughter of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton, has officially announced her engagement to Marc Mezvinsky. The couple made the announcement on Friday using email to family and friends. They said that they are planning to marry next summer. The engagement was officially confirmed by Clinton's spokesman Matt McKenna to CBS News.

Marc Mezinsky and Chelsea Clinton have been together since they were both teenagers so this wedding has been expected for a long time. The two met in Washington and later went on to attend Stanford University together. Mezinsky works as an investment banker at Golden Sachs and Clinton is attending graduate school at Columbia University's School of Public Health. Both come from strong political backgrounds; Mezinsky is the son of former Pennsylvania Rep. Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky and former Iowa Rep. Ed Mezvinsky who has a rather infamous past filled with scandal. Iowa Rep Ed Mezvinsky spent five years in prison for defrauding investors of more than $10 million in a major Nigerian scam.

On the heels of the Clinton-Mezvinsky engagement, here is a look at other nuptials with a political tinge:

During former President George W. Bush's presidency his daughter Jenna Bush wed Henry Hager son of chairman of the Republican Party in Virginia. Former President Bush flew in on Air Force One to attend the simple outdoor ceremony that was held on Saturday, May 10, 2008, at his beautiful ranch Prairie Chapel near Crawford, Texas. The wedding was not broadcast live for the nation but kept simple and quiet.

Very few of us will ever forget when former President Nixon danced with his daughter Tricia at her White House wedding at the White House in 1971 to Edward Finch Cox. The band played "Thank Heaven for Little Girls." It was a moving and monumental dance that left very few dry eyes as we all gazed at a side of President Nixon as a father giving away his baby girl.

The historic Tricia Nixon White House wedding was attended by over 400 guests and was held in the lovely Rose Garden. There was fear during the wedding day that rain would destroy the event so it would not be able to be held in the Rose Garden but would have to be moved to the East Room but Tricia stuck to her guns and held out hope until the end that the rain would clear. As the time for the wedding arrived the sun came through the clouds to create a truly glorious setting for the monumental day and it was held in the Rose Garden as planned.

There was bit of melancholy at John F. Kennedy Jr's. wedding to the beautiful Caroline Bisset as we all realized that his father will always be sorely missed, especially at the wedding of his only son. The wedding was quiet and very low key with only a dozen in attendance back in 1996 including the late Senator Edward M Kennedy.
