Marcayla Ackerson, 18, Victimized in Fatal Crash when Suspect Attempts to Flee Joplin Police

Boyd L. Damet Pending Criminal Charges

February 16, 2010 - Marcayla L. Ackerson, 18, of Joplin, Missouri was victimized in a fatal car accident after riding with Boyd L. Damet, 26, also of Joplin, Missouri who tried to "elude Joplin Police Department" in Jasper County, Missouri.

Damet was no stranger to criminal conduct, having had multiple charges on his record including use of drugs, possession of stolen property, and property damage. On one of the charges, Damet violated his probation and received jail sentence of 6 months, according to Missouri Case Net.

On February 16, 2010, police pursued Damet in a 2001 Ford Mustang on Missouri Road 66 just 1 mile West of Joplin, Missouri. When he failed to stop at a stop sign, he struck the 1998 Dodge Ram driven by Bradley W. McCoy, 34, of Riverton, KS and then the 2001 Toyota Highlander driven by James M. Felker, 43 of Joplin, MO. The impact seriously injured Marcayla Ackerson who was taken to Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri. She died at 3:00 am on February 17, 2010 and was pronounced dead at the hospital by Dr. Veer.

The Joplin Police Department is currently handling additional criminal charges against Damet. A list of charges has not yet been released.
