March 1 - National Pig Day Crafts and Fun

Celebrate the Little Things with a Party

JUNEANN REED
Celebrate on March 1, National Pig Day. Whether you want to make kids crafts, have "pig" foods or party, read on for simple instructions. Have fun with this.

Kids' crafts:

1. Make a pig from an egg carton. Cut out two of the foam egg-holder areas. Paint everything pink. Set one piece on top of the other. Add buttons, candy, chips or whatever you wish for the eyes. Add pink construction paper ears on either side of the top piece. Roll a pink pipe cleaner to make a pig's tail and attach to back of the pig. Add two little black dots inside a dark pink circle for the pig's snout. Fill with candy or as you wish.

2. Make a pig mask with a paper plate. Color a white paper plate pink or use a pink paper plate. Cut triangles for the ears and decorate around the eye holes. Bling is good! Cut a snout from 1/4 of a toilet paper roll. Flatten one end and glue to the paper plate. Attach string or elastic to wear mask.

Pig food:

1. Any bacon, sausage, barbecued pork ribs or ham [ham balls] would be great. A simple food would be pigs in the blanket. Serve with corn [think of a pig's favorite treat].

2. Chocolate pudding [mud] would be the absolute delight of any pig. Anything chocolate would fit the occasion.

Pig drinks:

1. Think pink pigs - pink drinks.

2. Anything chocolate or brown would be great for your theme. [Again, think mud.]

Pig decorations:

1. Colors could be pink and brown/black. You can find inexpensive pigs in the toy department, magazines, take pictures of them or simply use the word pig in a variety of ways.

Pig games:

1. Play the pig card game. We learned it very young. Any deck of cards will do. Four players are great - but two or more will do. Deal out four cards to each person. Each player holds cards for other players to draw [in succession]. As soon as any player has 4 cards the same [i.e. four 2s or four 6s] they quickly place their finger beside their nose. [Maybe you've played spoons.] This is the same game - without the spoons.

2. Place paper on your head. Ask everyone to draw a pig without looking. Choose best or funniest for the prize.

Maybe you'd like to read The Three Little Pigs or other fun children's pig stories. Even adults can simply act out these stories for a fun party game. Try it - you will laugh!
