March 14: Pie Day or Pi Day or 3.14 -- Anyway You Slice the Pi, My Family Benefits

My Wife Has Her Birthday Today

Gary Davis
Today, March 14, is my wife's birthday. It's a special one for her; she's turning 60 years old. She's beautiful and smart as ever and that would be worth of a story, but we can add to it. Today is also "Pi Day." You remember Pi, don't you? It's that insane mathematical representation we show as 3.14. Well actually it is 3.14159 but even that is not exact. I know marrying someone with a March 14 birthday was my deceased Algebra teacher's way of getting back at me. At any rate, among other things, people celebrate today by eating pie.

Jacob Aron has posted an article at the NewScientist.com website titled "Pi day: Celebrate pi by eating pies."

Pies are on sale for $3.14 and larger orders for $31.40, as our reference article says.

A number of suggestions as to how to celebrate have been removed apparently from copyright laws, so I went on my own mission to find some.

Going to Babble, I find that you can find coloring books at this site. The article suggests you go to YouTube and listen to "American Pie" by Don McLean.

Alright, I feel it is up to me to give you some suggestions as to how to celebrate Pi Day. These will be easy for you to do, which is the exact opposite of the Pi concept. It's my way of getting back.

First of all, hold your breath for 3.14 seconds. Don't get caught up in the concept of Pi going on and on; you could get in trouble.

Practice your simple math with these questions: "What do you get if you round Pi up to the nearest penny given that Pi is represented by 3.14 cents? (Four cents) What do you get if you round Pi (on the same basis) down to the lowest cent? (Three cents)

What do you have if you have three Pis? The answer is "A bakery." Yeah, I made that up.

What do you get if you add Pi and an absolute? "Absolutely Pi."

What are you if you subtract Pi from Pi?-"Pieless."

Yes I'll quit, and please no comments about the jokes; I'm just trying to enhance the happiness in your life.

So if you didn't know it was a special day, Pi Day, take the time to have a little fun. And while you're at it, send up a good thought for my wife. She's a very nice lady.
