March 2010 Movie Madness: Thrillers in Theaters that Share a Coincidental Theme

Previews and Reviews of Must-see Adventure Flicks in 2010

Cinema centers are sure to be packed with movie-goers this month. It's March movie madness and Hollywood has done a great job of producing exciting thrillers for the big screen. Enjoy a movie matinee, usually before 6 p.m., to save a few dollars. Below are sneak peeks and reviews of four adventure films in theaters during the month of March 2010, followed by the answer to the coincidental connection.

Season of the Witch "Not all souls can be saved." ~ Fantasy/Thriller/Adventure (Rated PG-13) In theaters March 19, 2010.

A Lionsgate and Relativity Media production, starring Nicholas Cage, Ron Perlman, Stephan Campbell Moore. Cage collaborates once again with director, Dominic Sena (Gone in 60 Seconds).

Cage plays a 14th century knight on a mission to save mankind from evil. This fantasy film is your basic good versus evil thriller. The knights must take a suspected 'black witch' to monks who will hopefully put an end to the plague they think she is responsible for. The previews do look captivating and entertaining.

Brooklyn's Finest ~ Action/Crime/Drama (Rated R) In theaters March 5, 2010.

Stellar and delicious cast: Wesley Snipes, Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke, and Don Cheadle. Hawke teams-up once again with director, Antoine Fuqua (Training Day).

This promising action-packed film follows the lives of 3 very different police officers. One of the three officer's is close to retirement (Gere), another is a narcotics officer with the stress of supporting his wife and seven children (Hawke), and the other officer works undercover and has wavering loyalties (Cheadle) to an infamous drug dealer (Snipes). The officers do not normally work together but a massive drug operation leads to all of them being involved in an intense crime scene showdown. Check out the preview here.

Green Zone ~ Drama/Action/Thriller (Rated R) In theaters March 12, 2010.

Starring Matt Damon, Greg Kinnear, Amy Ryan, Brendan Gleeson, Khalid Abdalla, and Jason Isaacs. Directed and produced by Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum).

Damon and Greengrass team up again to create another exciting, action-packed movie. The storyline of Green Zone is hauntingly familiar; the search for 'weapons of mass destruction' in Iraq. The Green Zone refers to the area in Baghdad, Iraq with an international presence that includes the U.S. Embassy. Matt Damon plays an Army officer, searching for answers and a mysterious informant in Iraq. His mission: to stop a deadly war. See the intense Green Zone movie trailer here.

Honorable mention:

Avatar ~ Sci-fi/Visual Effects/Adventure/Fantasy film (Rated PG-13) Sigourney Weaver stars and re-unites with director James Cameron (Aliens). Avatar is still in theaters and it premiered in mid-December 2009. According to Wikipedia, Avatar will be released on DVD and Blu-ray April 22, 2010 (which I find surprising, since it's still in theaters) and will reportedly not be available in the future. Avatar3D will be in stores around November 2010.

Have you discovered the coincidental theme or connection? It's not the most obvious and non-coincidental fact that they are all thriller movies, in theaters March 2010. The answer is: By chance (like that of a 'grab bag'), 4 out of 4 of the movie I chose to review all reunite stars and directors that collaborated in past films. Nicholas Cage and Dominic Sena - Gone in 60 Seconds; Ethan Hawke and Antoine Fuqua - Training Day; Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass - Bourne; Sigourney Weaver and James Cameron - Aliens.

Saw Avatar in 3D imax with the family -awesome!! Looking forward to seeing the rest of these. I haven't seen a preview for Season of the Witch yet but we usually end up watching much of what Lionsgate releases as most of them are horror. :D

Great reviews. I haven't been to the movies in ages either, so many movies to see, but so little time too.

I haven't been to the movies in ages, well actually since my 22 month old was born. Thanks for the previews. I'll know which ones to look for when they are available on "on demand".

  • Tricia Sabol2/28/2010

I hadn't heard of a couple of these -- they sound interesting!

  • Kay Balbi2/28/2010

I'm not a movie buff so I'm glad you provided the answer to the challenge at the end. Nicely done.

  • Abby Greenhill2/28/2010

I was never a movie goer...I don't care to be inside in close proximity to a bunch of strangers...last movie I saw was ET!

Thanks! I should have left Shutter Island on the list. Ironically, it fits the theme but narrowed it down to those movies released in March (excluding Avatar honorable mention)...
