Round two NCAA basketball tournament action featured several surprising upsets. St. Mary's, a tiny school located in the equally tiny San Francisco Bay Area suburb of Moraga, handed South bracket second seed Villanova a stunning 75-68 loss. The University of Northern Iowa struck a similar blow in the tournament, knocking out Midwest bracket top seed Kansas with a tight final score of 69-67. In the East bracket, number 3 seed New Mexico fell to number 11 Washington by a definitive 18 points.
In non-surprising March Madness bracket update news, East bracket top seed Kentucky sailed into the 2010 Sweet Sixteen with a 30-point victory over ninth seed Wake Forest, while Midwest region second seed Ohio State defeated Georgia Tech (10) by 9 on Sunday afternoon. In the West, top seed Syracuse soundly beat number 8 Gonzaga with a final of 87-65.
Sunday afternoon's arguably most dramatic victory came in a Midwest bracket game. Maryland fought back despite trailing Michigan State throughout most of their round two match-up, only to see the victory snatched away by a great three-point shot in the last second of the game. Cornell also continued its improbably march toward Indy, beating 4th seed Wisconsin by a decisive final score of 87-69.
Here's a look at the teams who have passed into the 2010 Sweet Sixteen, along with all match-ups and times of play. Sweet Sixteen NCAA tournament action will take place March 25-26.
