March is National Employee Spirit Month

Who Has Spirit?

Lori Piper
March is National Employee Spirit Month. Really it is. I am not joking, albeit, I may be laughing.

Employee Spirit? Who needs it? Who had it? Who benefits from it? How does one go about getting it? Where would one apply for some? Oh... and what is it to begin with?

A month to celebrate or acknowledge employee spirit? Is it more along the lines of, if an employee has shown employee spirit all year, they get a month of benefits? Maybe a raise? A picture plaque right next to the register for all to see?

Is it a time for employers to show employees how much they are appreciated? For validation and consideration to be honored all month?

Is it a month of patrons, customers, clients, and students to cheer on the employees they encounter every day?

I am going to be conservative here and think that maybe it is a month about how employees can show their spirit. Most days, most weeks, most months can fly by in a whirlwind of such chaos that often times employees can forget why they started working at a job in the first place. (I am taking a leap of faith here that the majority of people have become employed in a venue they chose based on personal like not familial need.)

So how can employees take the time to show their spirit this month?

Employees can show up to work on time every day this month.

Employees can smile as they enter the workplace and smile all day long.

Employees can laugh. Laughter is good. Laughter is contagious. Laugh!

Employees can bring lunch for two. Bring snacks. Chocolate treats every day at lunch? I would be smiling.

Employees can bring pets to work.

Employees can bring children to work.

Employees can dress down or more professional... it is their choice this month.

Wow... sis boom bah... rah rah rah. I am already considering cheering.

However, what if we look at this differently? What if this month were about companies and bosses showing their appreciation to their employees?

Employers would be more understanding of traffic jams that were of no fault to their employees... and construction delays.

Employers would say good job on a semi regular basis and yell less.

Employers would listen to employees, as they are the ones who interact the most with the public.

Employers would give raises to all whom deserve one.

Emlpoyers can offer ribbons, and awards.

Employers would not offer false promises or grandiose ones... stick with reality in the here and now.

Employers would acknowledge that without employees, they would not be where they are.

Who has spirit? We do.
Who has spirit? You do.
What is spirit? Yea- whoo
Where can we get some spirit?
Why let's meet up... at the Club Waterloo.

After all, they is more than one kind of spirit... and by the way... it's on the company card... bring a friend.

We do all of this anyway. I have a wonderful employer in a family based business. I'm thankful I have a job, and one that pays be very well. We get lots of incentives, and I do walk around with a smile for everyone because I am happy with my job. Thanks.

I didn't know this! I too doubt there's much spirit in the workplace air right now.

Ah yes, employee spirit would be greatly lifted if employees kept their jobs. Enjoyed the article.
