March Syrian Protests for Human Rights, Freedom of Speech, Religion, & a Democracy Becomes a Spring Event in Front of the White House
Washington, DC, DC 000000
United States of America
Syrians and Syrian Americans congregated this week in Washington, DC to speak with media reporters about what changes in the Syrian government would be of benefit to the many Syrians who suffer in their country from lack of clean water, scarce electricity, a lack of winter coats, scarce food, and always the threat of jail, brutality, kidnappings, and other types of violence if they state their opinion or post even poetry and needs on Internet blogs.
Syrian Americans are protesting in front of the White House in Washington, DC this week. The people are gathering. And the uprising is about protesting economic suffering, lack of jobs/employment for the population, including the professionals. Also check out this uTube video where a prominent Syrian American is interviewed about the hardships in Syria under its current regime. These protesters want to be heard in Washington, DC and across the USA.
Will this pan-Arabist movement help to create a democracy in Syria and in other Middle Eastern countries where economic and health hardships currently prevail? Freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and democracy are what these protesters are asking for in Syria. That's why they want to be heard by the media and are protesting in Washington, DC. Check out the various uTube videos on the Syrian protesters in the USA and around the globe.
Protesters in front of the White House this week are shouting for freedom and posting their protests on uTube. During the last month, the protests for democracy, freedom of religion, and freedom of speech, increased as people asked to be heard. The protests are fueled by long-term discontent and unemployment. People are protesting against the more than 40 years of extreme brutality in Syria. And this type of unemployment, including frequent jailing of anyone with an opinion and discontent is helping to fuel the protests. The current regime is imprisoning people who are trying to protest the dictatorship.
Syria was ruled with an iron fist of brutality since 1970 with the Assad family, especially in the big cities, with thousands of people killed when they stated their opinion or asked to be heard. This week the protesters are being heard in Washington, and the media is spreading the news of their protests asking for a democracy in Syria.
Check out the media interviews in Washington DC with a prominent Syrian American professional in the USA for a quarter of a century as he is joined by other Syrian and Syrian American protesters asking for religious equality and democracy for Syria so that people can be heard around the globe in peace. Protesters are asking for freedom fueled by long-term suffering and unemployment in Syria. In Washington DC the protesters can safely protest in peace and state their request for freedom for Syrians.
The protesters want the same kind of democracy for Syria that they have found in the USA, that is the ability to protest in Washington in front of the White House. They are asking for human rights and are protesting the present ruler in Syria that they report rules with an iron fist and has jailed and killed thousands of people because those people had asked for their voice to be heard. It makes us, here in Sacramento thankful that all of our voices can be heard under the U.S. Constitution which gives us the right of free speech in the media.

The Syrian Diaspora in the US
Most people in the US haven't heard of the Syrian Diaspora. There are about 16 million Syrians in the Diaspora spread across the USA and in various European and Latin American countries. According to news reports, "many are shocked by the videos they have been witnessing of Assad's savagery. Many have started planning their own rallies in western capitals in support of Syrians at home."
Syrian and Lebanese-American communities in the USA online are able to view and hear up-to-date news of the uprising in Syria where many of them may have relatives or friends. And for those interested in English language current news of the Syrian uprising, there are mailing lists, Yahoo groups such as "We love Syria" and news groups in addition to Twitter. Check out the Syrian Revolution Digest (Damascus Bureau) online, in English.
Why is this of interest to Americans of diverse ancestral ethnicity? You have students in the USA majoring in Middle East Area studies and history as well as the Middle Eastern community in many US cities. And for those who may have an interest in how democracy spreads from one country to the next through ideas, the online news sources from social media are a good place to start research.
In the USA there are growing Middle Eastern communities with various food markets and restaurants that many Americans enjoy--food, music, and culture. Also, teachers at all levels may focus a topic on current events such as studying what happens in the Middle East, in the various nations.
Why isn't there enough mainstream media in the USA covering the Syrian uprising in the English language? The videos on uTube usually are in Arabic. So if you're not speaking the language, you won't get much of the news. For example, there are news stories of American and European women married to Syrian nationals living in Syria and their fate during the uprising. But how much of this news is carried in English so Sacramento news enthusiasts of global issues can study the topic, including teachers and students in Sacramento.
One of the ways you're going to get news is by adding your email address to a publication that comes to you by email called Syrian Revolution Digest. The publication will keep you up to date on who is the partly responsible for the attack, which according to the Digest is the Syrian Security Forces.
You can also find out more on Twitter-verse. It managed to provide immediate coverage resulting in prompt media reports and live interviews on Al-Arabiya TV. When the news is in a language you have not learned, it may be one reason why mainstream media is not picking up more information. There's also a media blackout.
Most news agencies seem willing to report that 15 are confirmed dead, but activists on the ground report that the number is well beyond 150, as many of the wounded were in serious condition when they were removed from the streets by army vehicle and taken to unknown destinations. Sources confirm that they were not taken to any hospitals in Dara'a or surrounding counties.
The massacre received wide international attention, with many media outlets reporting on it as it happened, due to buzz generated on Twitter and outreach efforts by exiled activists and human rights groups.
Meanwhile, the Syrian Revolution Digest reports that "Syrian officials are mounting an extensive public relations campaign, as their spokesmen flood TV stations speaking as if they were members of the opposition, calling for reforms, admitting mistakes, saying the 'President' intends to call for a major conference on political reform, all while raising all sorts of doubts about foreign agendas, infiltrators and suspicious happenings in Dara'a."
This is an old tactic and, despite the greater exposure by Syrians to different versions of the "truth" thanks to social media tools satellite channels, it can still be effective, among those too scared to act ad are in search of excuses and justifications for their behavior, according to the online English language Syrian Revolution Digest.
If you get on the email list, you'll note that the information comes from a London address. There are links to an English language version of the news. American viewers would like to see a link to translations of any relevant news videos uploaded to uTube. Readers might also check out the excellent list of video sites to explore. Many of the video sites are in Arabic.
Also current news from the Reform Party in Syria reports, from Dara'a the following, "There are reports that over 100 peaceful demonstrators have been killed in Dara'a on Wednesday, with many more injured. Dara'a's hospital is not equipped to handle this number of injured.
"Power has been cut-off from the city, which is endangering the lives of the injured. No shipments of food are allowed and water conditions are deteriorating fast. With 100,000 people in the city, diseases will break out soon if the international community and the Red Cross do not come to its aid. Not one word on the Washington Post website about the killing streets in Dara'a. UAE. a Video of Syrians demonstrating in Dubai in support of Syrians at home."
According to the Syrian Revolution Digest, "How effective this tactic will be demonstrated on coming Friday. Activists are calling for mass demonstrations to take place following the Noon prayers, the size of the crowds willing to respond will divulge much about the pace, course and nature of events in the days and weeks to come."
